64gb SSDs Go Primetime

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=8826

So basically, if Apple decides to go for it, we could be seeing 64gb iPod Touches as soon as MWSF.

The great thing about it is that it doesn't require major changes to the internal hardware with the iPod. Also if they so chose, they could immediately double it to 128gb by making the iPod Touch slightly thicker.

It's 1.8".

For the record, I know these have been in production for a while, but shoving them into Dell and Alienware is going to make the price plummet, then with Apple following suit, it won't have much of an impact on the current price of the iPod Touch.

FYI, getting the two 64 GB SSDs in the Alienware notebook makes the price rise $2000. So yeah. Not gonna happen all that soon.

This is very interesting, good find! When's MWSF? How much do these things run for? And what are the odds that this thing will actually show up in the iPod Touch?

They won't. Wanna place a little friendly wager on that? :)

PRIMETIME is when the product is available at Walmart, not exotic Alienware as u inferred.

MWSF = Mac World San Fran, every January.

you guys cant be serious...

it took apple about a freakin year to update the 5g ipods to 5.5g...and you actually think they will update the touch 2 and a half months after releasing?...i highly doubt that...if apple wanted to..they would of given more capacity to the touch when they announced it......

but good find anyway..its great for the future of touch..maybe in a year;)

Okay... I do realize that. But how much do you believe they're overcharging? They'd need to have about a 900% profit margin on these things in order for them to be feasible in an iPod right now.

And Apple which is also in the upper tier of the pricing structure.

They are shoving them in Dell computers too, some of the cheapest and most common computers in the world which also ship worldwide, even to third-world and developing countries.

Well they dropped the price of the iPhone by $200 and gave all previous iPhone customers the option of a $100 rebate two months after they released it... what's a minor capacity upgrade?

They would have wanted to get it out for the holiday season. 32gb and 64gb SSDs would have been to expensive when Apple started mass-manufacturing the iPod Touch and they would have missed the holiday season. Now that that's over they can work on capacity upgrades and there's no reason why Apple can't just throw in bigger capacity and better battery life for a minor upgrade of the Touch in MWSF (which is in January, XVI.)

I want to point out a few things here:

1) The fact that it's more than possible is all I was saying. Apple COULD do it, whether they will or not is another matter entirely, but see #3 below.
2) You all seem to forget these are going into Dell products too. Dell is not Alienware (and we all know Alienware is bloated-overpriced crap so it's really not a good comparison to make.) Dell wouldn't be doing this if their prices went up so much in their general computers that it became unfiesable for them... think about it.
3) No one in their right mind (although we were all hoping) could have predicted that just months after the announcement of 160gb HDDs going into production that they would make it into an iPod. They were barely known to exist, and yes, I'll admit they are a hell of a lot cheaper than SSDs at the moment, but whether Apple does it in January, this time next year or the year after, there's a pretty nice (not perfect, but getting there) price ratio between 64gb SSDs and 160gb HDDs for that kind of production, I'd say.

The joys of speculation ;]

I can see a 32gb in January, and so can Apple. That is 100% fiesable with no problems about higher prices or major design changes.

And hopefully 64gb will take hold quick enough to come out this time next year with a few other goodies for us all. However, seeing what Apple did with the 160gb harddrive, there's no reason why they wouldn't re-do some bits and add two 32gb HDDs. Although now I've said this they'll read it and think 'Ha, we'll show him.'

iPhone price drop aside when have you ever seen Apple make a major iPod update mere months after introducing the item? Not impossible but I still say it won't be updated until next year.

Not sure of the exact dates but I'm sure they've done it at least twice, with between 4-6 months between.

There's the timeline. The only time they did significantly less than a year was when they went to the iPod photo which wasn't so much a capacity increase as it was a screen change. There was a capacity change involved though as they intro'd the 30 and 60 gig.

# 14 Re: 64gb SSDs Go Primetime
I don't think apple would increase capacity that much so soon.
We aren't talking about a simple price drop (and it's not like that was taken in with open arms from current iphone owners, regardless of any rebate).
Adding that much storage would change the way the itouch is viewed and it would be like releasing a new ipod.
Just because they CAN doesn't mean they will.

Doubt it. Apple gets what Apple wants. If Toshiba won't cough up the goods, they'll get someone who will.

Toshiba and Apple have a pretty good relationship. I think we could see the higher capacity Toshiba flash in 2G or perhaps 3G iPhone and Touch in the not so distant future.

We won't see a 64GB iTouch priced at $399 until 2009 so y'all can forget about that one for a while. Instead concentrate your minds on the 32GB version coming next year.

I think you are forgetting that Dell OWNS Alienware and they are both pretty much the same. Alienware used to be cheaper but dell pushed it's prices up higher and dell is still even higher than alienware from what I have seen. Eother way samsung which makes the drives charges like $1100 for each one. even if apple bought them for cheaper in bulk or the pirce is higher than what they sell to manufacturers it would still cost like $1500 for a 64 GB touch which obviously no one would buy and apple would still not be making near the profit they like to make. a 32 GB model by next year is probably what you can expect.

Huh, something went wrong in the formatting of the above post.

The 'Alienware used to be cheaper but dell pushed it's prices up higher and dell is still even higher than alienware from what I have seen.' part was supposed to be quoted.
