bottom line, what type of headphone sounds best at similar price points?
The title says it all. Aside from where you listen to them, cool factor all that stuff, what type of headphones will sound best from nothing but an ipod, no amplifier? I've heard iem's will never be as good as cans, but that's just what someone said.

I just purcased some AKG k26p for $40 and was surprised at the sound quality. They sound very good and the phones I use now. I got them as street phones. They fold up and come with a storage bag.
The Grado sr60's sound very good but I only use these at home. They are open and if your riding public transportation others can hear your music.

it's a matter of how loud they can go for me. My Sennheiser HD650's sound great with my ipod shuffle, but without an amp, they just don't satisfy my volume wise. Grado are very forgiving.
Many people look at the Ohms figure, the lower the better. even with that said, my Ultrasone iCans, still need a headphone amp to drive them well. but i like everyone to hear what i'm heariing, which isn't good for your ears.
i'd prefer to buy a pair of JBL reference 410' rather than the AKG k26p's, for the simple reason that the JBL's headband makes the headphones slightly more comfortable.
