mdr-ex71sl connection shot; suggestions?

Today, after about 7 months of use without any problems, the connection to my right earphone is now shot. It won't get any sound unless I hold the wire in a precarious position. Besides the fact that I'm now out a good $50 investment, I'm also out a good pair of earphones.

Is there anything I can do to fix this connection, or will I have to purchase a new pair? Also, what suggestions do you have for making sure this doesn't happen again? i.e., How should they be stored in pockets? Wrapped around the iPod, or just shoved into there?

Okay, I've been able to "save" my earphones for now. What happened was when I tried bending the wire to the right side in all sorts of positions to see if I could restore the connection, I found that if I stuffed the wire into the little silver "nut" a bit and twisted it upwards, I could get sound back through it. A little more testing and some scotch tape, and they're good as new...for now.
