Best headphones for under 40 bucks?

the absolute best 'headphones' if you can stretch just a little over your budget is the Grado, iGrado's.

if you can't just get a pair of JBL refernce 410's. they bass kicks like a pair of fullsized headphones. sonically, they're not as detialed as the iGrado's or the Sennheiser twins (PX100 / PX200) but they JBL can do things that these three can only dream about.

1) iGrado's if you can squeeze just a bit more money

2) if not, try the JBL 410's

i'm currently looking for a set of headphones and while I don't know anything about them, I'm finding some good info on cnet.com. They gave a pretty good review for a brand calld V Moda. they offer headphones in a number of different colors, but I belive cnet could only find them available in black. They were in the $30 to $50 I think.

i've read too many stories about iffy build quality from the V-Moda vibes http://headphonedeals.org/?cat=22 . the sound is like a grown up version of the Sennheiser CX300, but regardless of the sound, the patchy build quality and the fact that the Crossroads MylarOne X3's offer better detail, would have me knocking on the www.jaben.net door. the Mylar X3's are far more robust than the Vibes, and they even survived being dropped in the bath, briefly.

the JBL's sound isn't as open as the Sennheiser, but they are far fuller. the bass thumps rather than kicks.

i took my JBL's on the plane to Prague this summer and they did fine. They aren't going to win any 'comfort' prizes, the clamping effect is more noticeable with the JBL's than the PX100's.

They do look like they're open because of the design, but in actual fact, they're closed. Sound leakage?......depends on where you have the volume!

But my money would be on the JBL's every time. Yes i might miss a touch of detail and delicacy that the PX100's have, but i would miss the thumping, full sound of the JBL's 10 times more.
