Denon AH-C700...wow!
I have limited experience with IEMs as I found the ones I've tried uncomfortable, so my scope of comparison is limited to canal buds; Sony EX71 & EX90, Apple in-ears, and Senn CX300s. Of these, the Sennheisers have been my hands down favorites. I've tried V-Moda Vibes and found them ridiculously bassy.
IMO, the Denons nicely fill a niche between big money IEMs and the CX300s, providing excellent highs and nice tight thumpy bass that doesn't muddy up the mids and highs. If the CX300s' bass sounds a bit canned, the Denon's bass has free reign. Hip hop and electronica fans will rejoice, and jazz fans will enjoy new found respect for the bass player, while still being able to discern finger clicks on the sax keys. Soundstage is similar to the CX300, with a bit more space.
All this, while being exactly as comfortable as EX71s and CX300s. I find the fit to be a bit more secure, as the torpedo shape lets me push the buds in a bit farther than the more globe shaped CX300s. This affords a better seal too. Now I'm able to use the medium tips instead of the large which I use on the CX300s. The tips are basically the same between the two BTW.
The only concern I have is that instead of the CX300s' mesh grille covering the port, the Denons have what appear to be a spun paper/fabric material, similar to the EX71s, though a bit denser looking. (Anyone have any recommendations for keeping this type of cover clean? I'd hate to resort to the pin##### trick.)
The body of the buds are longish, to which the bass probably owes much to. The end cap is aluminum, with a hole at the end. The front half of the bud is plastic and shaped basically the same as the CX300. The cord is nice and beefy, and appears a bit shorter than CX300s' cord. The straight jack has an aluminum cover. It does NOT fit into the iPhone jack. :(
Overall, I think these buds are pretty great. The lack of heavy duty port covers, iPhone compatible jack, and the fact that they come with no case of any kind are all that keep me from giving them a 10. But because I got em so cheap, I'm giving them a 12, for value vs. quality. Would I pay list ($150) for these? I definitely would if they had a mic/button and fit the iPhone. As they are, I think they're more like $100 buds, but easily the best sounding buds and most comfortable I've experienced at their price.
