Etymotic ER-4P for working out?

I'm thinking of getting Etymotic ER-4P earphones to use while working out. I mostly do the Elliptical and that one machine where it's like your skiing (no treadmills), then I do weights. Supposedly the Etymotic ER-4P does not have the microphonic effect, so that won't be a problem, but what about comfort and fit? Will they fall off or anything like that?

Am I better off getting Senn CX300 phones on eBay for 20 bucks for working out?

Just get the CX300. It won't matter much if they get broken or stolen. The ER4p have the worst microphonic cable of all the IEMs.

If you like the Etymotic sound, you should maybe consider getting the cheaper (and more comfortable) ER6i's instead. IMO, these are ideal for the gym as they are incredibly light and surprisingly sturdy (don't be fooled by the thin wires). I have been using these in the gym every day for the past 18mths and have been very happy with them.

Thanks for the suggestion. How is the sound quality on the ER 6i? And, do you have any issues with the bass?

The sound quality on the ER6i is very good IMO, especially for use in the gym when you wouldn't be concentrating on the sound as much as you would when sitting at home (compared to the better ER4P's). I like the bass on them as I tend to prefer a clean crisp sound to an overwhelming thumping bass. I can understand why others have a problem with the bass however. That is why I suggested them 'if' you liked the Etymotic sound. Like any earphones, it will come down to individual sound preference, but as far as gym comfort, I think the ER6i's are hard to beat.

What exactly is the "Etymotic sound"? Is it like when I just wake up and talk, my voice sounds all soft and cute?

The "Etymotic Sound" is quite an experience. They sound almost as goog as the stock Apple earbuds and feel like two ice-picks jammed in your ears. But seriously, the ER4 and ER6i sound really horrible however they cost a lot so you can brag about how much you spent.

The Sennheiser CX-300 costs 1/3 as much and sound fantastic. Don't take my word for it though. Read only the negative reviews on any fone to get a real idea of what you are getting. Positive reviews are almost always flowery crap and BS. Beware of words that only mean something to audiophiles like "presence" "brilliance" "deep base extension" "sound stage" and, yes, "Etymotic sound."

say what now!?

almost as good as stock ibuds? what planet are you living on!

ibuds are the worst earphones. cx300's (identical to sharps hp md33 & creative ep630, mass produced but rebadged ;) ) are the next step up. they are simply not "audiophile" canalphones. where are the flanged tips, the foam tips, the filters etc...? they're only better than ibuds because the have rubber tips that form a seal in your ear.

anyone who buys "audiophile" canalphones can compare them to ibuds & the cx300 type & will discover which sound best. until then, you can continue convincing them that night is day, that aliens are at roswell & that god really exists!!!

can't see why you feel threatened by "audiophile" canalphones. they cost quite a bit & usually, people will still go out & buy something like the CX300 on their way to something better, which may be some time later as people need to save up. CX300's do ok as an emergency set of headphones i guess (i wouldn't know, i have hd25-1 cans, replaceable parts ;) ) but they have a long way to go to being "audiophile". they're cheap ibud replacements FFS!!!

as for "etymotic sound", grado sound, akg sound, my dog farting sound... lol different manufacturers!!

microphonics? has no-one ever heard of tie clips? i've had ibuds & cx300's, never heard microphonics :shake:

I'm not threatened by "audiophile canalphones" all I said is that the Etymotics sound like crap and they do. Apple earbuds are virtually identical to the ER-6i in sound quality but the Etymotics have great isolation. Other than that, they suck.

You mention that the CX-300 is the same as some Sharp and Creative models. So what? You also say that the CX-300 are not "audiophile canalphones." This is exactly my point and why the original poster should buy them. They are not audiophile canalphones, they simply out perform them at a fraction of the cost.

tut tut

people who go & buy these earphones can compare for themselves. you just can't beat actuall experience. let's not exaggerate & say this & that earphone are going to be almost as good as ibuds. ibuds are an appalling after thought & certainly some of the worst. apple know this, they know people will either upgrade for sound or stick with the fashion.

have to say, my ibuds failed pretty quickly, my CX300's were an improvement but ultimately suffered the same fate. i do feel they are good for the price, you're right they're not audiophile canalphones, but they may leave people wanting more... they'll probably take into account the reviews of certain earphones across different sites over one person's bias / grudge ;)
