Which iPod for a starter?
Hello. I've registered here a long time a go and posted a few times but I feel like a new user.
I'm thinking of getting an iPod after putting it away after a year or so. The release of the new iPods has burned my spirit and determination on to get one. But, so different many iPods confuse makes me.
I'm a laid back music listener with just 1 GB music in my 30GB Creative Zen but has about 20+GB of videos. So, my collection can suit all iPods except for the Nano and Touch which I have to customize a bit.
I thought of getting the cool, sleek and sexy Touch but it is quite expensive. I can afford it but I have to drain every single penny of my collected allowance.
The new 6G looks nice but it's hard drive is too big for me. I might as well get a used 5.5G from eBay if that's the case and the 5.5G is very similar to my current one (Just Wiki or Google it). But I wouldn't rule the 5.5G or 6G completely.
I don't really like the wide 3G Nano but the 2G Nano is small and sleek and also the cheapest.
Okay, that's all I have to say. Give me your views .
PS: How do you post a poll here?

iTouch is 4u.
'Coz it has the most features, and since your music collection is small - perfect. Retorical Q. Does one watch the same videos over-and-over-and-over? As long as yr OK with its physical dimension.

If you're going to put 21GB of media onto an iPod would say get the Classic 80GB for $250. By getting a used 30GB, you will have only 28GB of actual space. So that leaves you with 7GB free. Not good if your video collection is growing.

I totally agree with this post.
If your collection is 21GB (and growing) you should future-proof yourself by getting a larger capacity PMP remember your formatted capacity will be less than 80GB not sure exacly how much but Id guess at 3.xGB... leaving you about 76GB left...
but why are you getting a new PMP when you have the Creative ?
# 4 Re: Which iPod for a starter?
I would say the 80GB classic is your best option, maybe even the 160 if you wanna go all out.

The Nano would be the best option
# 6 Re: Which iPod for a starter?
The Nano plays videos and is much cheaper at 8GB than shelling out for an expensive device for videos that has the same screen. The iPod Touch would have the biggest screen but as you said its expensive. With the 8GB nano you can have all of your music on there and swap the videos on and off that you want.

Yeah, if I had more money I wouldn't consider other but...

Good point. I'm an avid movie downloader and it's a pain to burn them

Because I also want to try the hype that is iPod. I've heard positive and negative reviews of it and its time to test it my own. With the new 80GB cheaper than my 30GB, I'm happy to get one.

Another good point.
More advice please! And also, how do I create a poll?

Don't buy a refurb off ebay Trax, Apple sells them and you get there one year warranty with it.
The 8GB nano is $199 and the 80GB Classic is $249. I actually say go with the classic if you can because the screen is 5 centimeters more than the Nano and you can hold a lot of movies, videos, music, photos etc. I have individual movies that take up a good 665mb so depending on how much you want on it that wouldn't be too bad. Plus last year the price was $100 more for the same capacity, and you get the aluminum front which isn't as prone to scratches. You have HD but unless you plan on running while listening to music and/or watching videos, you should be fine. Seriously, you have 21 GB which I'd say in your position is good for the 80GB purchase. You'll own the iPod for two years or more (it should be working that long) so I'm sure in that time you'll get even more content for it.
Also, the 2G Nano doesn't play videos, it plays music only.

All those who are saying get the Nano, did you read where he said he had 20+GB of videos? To me an iPod video is the only logical choice

Ya know, there is always chores, lawn....
waitdaminute, yr testing the iPod 'coz of hype? U know the iPod only takes a coupla of video formats right? U maybe spending megatime converting your video library.
But...but the iTouch has the bigger screen! sideway screen! it's MADE for video. But sure if yer spending *THAT* much time on video, then the storage is too limited.
# 11 Re: Which iPod for a starter?
It's up to your viewing habits, I suppose...
I know that I, despite having around 8GB of video, rarely watch anything I've already watched. Music videos and movie trailers are my focus, really, with TV shows and movies occupying my time if I absolutely have nothing better to do.
If you wouldn't mind setting the iPod to only sync unwatched, or recently added, videos, you could most likely manage with iPod touch, otherwise I'd definitely say go with iPod classic.
Keep in mind the Wi-Fi features- Safari, YouTube, etc. If a lot of what you watch is on YouTube (and you're usually able to connect to a network), you could just stream the videos.

That's exactly what I was trying to infer above...
I mean, I guess is cool walking around with your ENTIRE video library so when at friends house, people say we're so bored! u wif out ur Pod and go ta-da!!! What ya want T3? Brock Back Mountain? Car?
I would most likely just carry the latest+favorites and that's it.

I live in a condo and we don't do that in Malaysia. The prices here are also much higher than the US's. About three point five. We earn the same ratio as Americans (RM2000 salary here, U$2000 salary there). So you can imagine the hell we go through to afford tech toys.
Yeah, the hype. I've seen pictures, watched videos and read reviews of the iPod. I want to judge the iPod myself. Pray it doesn't disappoint me.
I though about the converting bit. Converting to iPod format has an advantage which is smaller space. At least I get an advantage out of the disadvantage. It sort of neutralises each other.
Good point. The 2.5" screen turns me off sometimes.

Apple sells refurb? Gotta check that out. Anyone knows the prices for them?
The Classic is something that I can grow on it and it's new anodize skin is more scratch resistant. If I get the the Classic, I probably don't have to buy the bigger hard drive I'm saving for because 80GB is bigger than my desktop's hard drive(I know, lame).
Yeah, I know. The 2G Nano is just to let me have a feel of the iPod. Something like dipping your toes into the swimming pool.

True, who watches same videos everyday. Unlike music, videos requires two senses and attention. iPod Touch might be possible after all. Safari is a definite addon I'd like having. The touchscreen is one of a kind too. In my country, touchscreens only exists on one smartphone, HTC which nobody can afford. Plus the resemblance to iPhone is uncanny. Damn, I need more money. Alms for the poor? Hahaha.
Okay, I'm sure theres more of you who have their cents worth so bring it.
I think it is a real close call between the iPod Classic 80GB and iPod Touch 8GB(not 16 because 100$ which doesn't give much more).
