ipod classic as an external storage of mp3?

I want to use the ipod classic as an external storage for my mp3s. Is it a bad idea since it seems to be complicated to transfert them back to the computer if the need arise?

to be precise, I want to store all my mp3s and all my cds on it to free up some space on my pc, and be able to leave with all my music library when I want..

good or bad idea with an Ipod?

I think an easier, cheaper and better solution would be an external HD. How much space do you need?

I agree with you on that BBD. I was able to get a 500gb external HD from Best Buy for just a little over $100. So it would be a whole lot easier to get an external than to play around with an iPod for the purpose that you're talking about.

Well I do want to listen to my mp3s at work for instance..I forgot to mention that in my first post sorry

I agree with your suggestion that an external hdd would be better for massive external storage, but it lacks a bit in the mp3 player departement

the whole ''you need itune or a 3party software to get songs on it and you can't get them out easily'' part is slowing my interest a bit..

This is a very bad idea. An mp3 player is just that...a way to carry your music around & listen to it where & when you want. It is not a permanent, long term storage solution. Things happen to portable music players - you lose them, you drop them, there is some sort of glitch that requires that they be reformatted & start fresh.

If your ONLY copy of your MP3's are on your iPod, you will eventually lose them. Hope your music collection is small - you'll be re-ripping it again (and again) until you keep a copy somewhere else.

The external HD suggestion was not meant as "instead" of an MP3 player - it is in "addition to" an mp3 player.

I see..

thanks for the enlightement, I still might get the ipod classic 160gb but I'll grab another hdd or an external hdd like you mentionned for backup purposes.

I've never had a mp3 player before, never had any experience, actually I bought like 2 weeks ago a microSD card for my cellphone and I'm using that as my first mp3 player.

so thanks a lot to everyone for answering my questions!
