Bookmarking MP3s on the go and firmware updates.

I was wondering... it doesn't seem possible to bookmark files. I often listen to MP3s of the howard stern show which is 4-5 hours long and cannot possibly be listened to in one sitting. There isn't a way I've noticed to save my spot in an MP3 like there is in my other MP3 players. Am I missing it or is the iPod missing this feature.

And how is Apple at releasing firmware updates and bugfixes? Say for example... how long would you expect apple to take in order to respond to the recent battery glitch.

Huh, usually the iPod should hold your place in a file if you turn it off. I know with video it works that way, even if you switch to another video and watch that for awhile. Make sure your pausing it before backing out of the menu or switching the unit off. With audio you might be limited to staying with that one file, so if you break don't start listening to something else. When you turn it back on after pausing and shutting down it should still be where you left off.

As for firmware updates, they are fairly sporadic, but in the early stages of a "new" iPod, they seem to come out every 3 weeks or so.

That's really, really lame regarding bookmarking... I don't suppose apple is one for adding new features in firmware updates. If they haven't done bookmarking yet it's not like they will now.

I don't mean holding place when you shut it off. I mean physically being able to go to the menu and save your spot in an MP3. This very basic function seems to be missing from the iPod and it seems like something that would be severely easy to do. Hell everything software related on the Classic could be done in a firmware update. It's pretty inexcusable to not have a bookmark function. Is it possible to flash to the last Apple firmware so my iPod doesn't drain the battery when it's shut off?

Do I need to have iTunes in order to install a firmware update?

Easy solution, open iTunes, go to the file you wish for the iPod to remember playback position, right-click select get info, click options tab, check "remember playback position"

Not a viable solution. If I'm out and about listening to something and I have to stop listening for whatever reason and the player shuts off or switches tracks because I forget to pause it. iTunes isn't going to help me. Also, for me anything having anything to do with iTunes is not an easy solution. iTunes lags to the point of not being usable. It takes 100 percent of my computers resources at times just to drag folders onto a playlist. Then I need to wait a minute or two each time to be able to move onto the next object.

What he is saying is, Itunes will sync the file your ipod. So it will bookmark the file on your pod. You only have to set the option once for each file.

Not as good as multiple bookmarks but you take the rough with the smooth.

Hopefully rockbox for the classic will rectify this, but I can live with it as its is. I miss the bookmarking feature of my ZVM.

I download the Opie and Anthony show daily from Audible and my 160GB Classic always remembers where I leave off. I have never had to set these to remember my place, the iPod has just done this automatically.
