New to IPod and ITunes

Well I finally broke down and got one. I just purchased the 80GB Classic. So far I have enjoyed it and still getting to learn it better. I have notice a few this bugs that are listed here but for it being my first IPod I have nothing to compare it to. Well it is time consuming to rip your whole CD collection lol. It took me a few days but I know have just under 5k songs on it. I have the latest firmware and iTunes installed.

I do have a couple of questions tho.

I have charged it and drained it a couple of times now but I was concerned on the battery life as it doesnt seem to work as advertized specs. Last night I decided to test it out I have been playing my cd collection since 6 pm yesterday and now it is about 830pm and the battery only shows about 10% left. I thought this thing was supposed to get like 40 hours of play with audio. It has played just about 400 songs so far and all my music is 128 .aac files and have only activated the light via the click wheel to view the status a few times. Sofa it has been 27 hours playing at 3/4 volume. as being new to this thing is that good performance or should it be better?

the other question is I want some good ear buds for flying as I have to have the volume up all the way on the iPod to get past the outside noise. I know this cant be good for my ears. I would like to block the noise and have a lower volume. I have read many reviews and such but I cant decide on the ones that I should get. I dont want to spend a whole lot on them but say $150 or less. Please help me decide. As writing this I am thinking about the Senn. cx300s but afraid of getting counterfeit ones as I have read a lot about people getting fake ones.

Thanks for any input.

Be sure to read all the "sticky" bulletins at the top of all the forums here that apply to your iPod and operating system. This will answer many of the questions you have now.

My 160GB player has already gone for well over 36 hours on a charge, so that already beats most of my previous iPods. I haven't tried going to 40 yet, but the actual play time depends on how much track-accessing you do, how often you turn the unit on and off, how much bouncing around it does... anything that affects hard drive spin-up and access.

There are a lot of fake Sennheisers out there, so be wary of counterfeits. (I've also seen numerous fake Sony EX90s and 91s on eBay, all from Hong Kong-based suppliers.) If you need total isolation, the Etymotics or the Shures would be my choice, and they both have models in the $100-$150 price range. Find a dealer that will let you return them if you don't like the sound and comfort; Headphone.com (http://www.headphone.com/) is a pretty decent site that's given me good service in the past, and you can also try the companies that support this website.

Thank you for the information. I looked at the specs wrong as the specs on the 30GB is 30 hours and I got 28 hours before I decided to go on and charge it. I may have been able to push it a bit longer.

For the ear buds I wish they had a place to listen to them before you spent the cash. I am down to the super fi 5 pro or the senn cx300s just have to make the purchase....

Also, rated/published battery life is under ideal conditions. Unless Apple does it differently, most testing I've heard of uses mp3 @ 128kps (Is AAC more processor-intensive than mp3?) using one song or album played in a continuous loop at low volume. It sounds as though your battery is OK to me.

I've always trusted the reviews at headfi.org. Also, there's a "Best Headphones" tab on the iLounge home page that shows ratings and user experiences/reviews. It may go without saying, but make sure you buy from a reputable e-tailer (I've purchased 'phones from Zipzoomfly.com, amazon.com, buy.com, and ecost.com. Excellent service from all.) as opposed to eBay and the like. Your budget certainly allows spending enough to get high quality 'phones from a reputable source.
