160gb classic puts out audio even at volume turned completely down

The topic explains it all. My new 160gb Classic always puts out audio, even when I turn the volume completely down. I've tried many earplugs/headphones and all have the same behaviour. My firmware is the new 1.0.2.

Is this normal?

Additionally, in comparison to my previous 5.5g iPod, this one is considerably more quiet, is there still a volume restriction on european iPods?

Just happy to hear I'm not the only one. I'm really getting ####ed at all this Apple's bad quality and questionable decisions stuff. Someone might argue that it acctually makes more sense that way, because you can just pause the audio if you want to mute it fast. But I still don't like this, virtually every device does mute the audio if you put the volume down completely. My iPod should do the same.

Mine plays music when the volume is all the way down but it does not bother me...

Yeah it does. Sometimes, when I'm by myself and there is no other noise, I wish it went down all the way, but normally it's not an issue. With the lower volume, I think it's about the same at full, but I think it scales differently. More of a curved line from bottom to top whereas the old ones were more linear, if that makes any sense.

For what it's worth, my 60 Gig Photo also is audible at the lowest volume setting, but it's MUCH harder to hear.

Yes, my iPod classic does the same thing. I am just curious though, why would you be listening to music at the iPod's lowest volume setting? Isn't the purpose of turning the volume all the way down so that you can't hear anything? I guess I don't get why it is a big deal that the iPod makes a tiny bit of sound whenever it is turned all the way down as you normally wouldn't be able to hear the music anyway. The pause feature would be put to much better use here.

Ditto with mine. It doesn't bother me. I think the output is down by about -60dB or something, so it's so quiet as to not matter. God help you if somebody cranks it up to max, though.

I do not want to hear music I pause the player or remove the ear phones.

To me this sounds ok and is actually a good idea.
