Strange scenario-file sizes increase

My hard drive crashed on my PC so I bought a new one and installed it. I moved everything from my i-pod to my new hard drive using my 5th generation video i-pod as a hard drive.

Well, Everything moved over fine. however, the 30 gigs of music I had total over 120 gigs of music on my new hard drive. Taking up way too much space. What exactly happened and do I need to adjust the bit rate of songs? Why did the files quadruple in size whenI moved them from my i-pod to my new hard drive? Did I-tunes convert them to larger files of higher quality?

Any input on correcting this would be appreciated!

Thanks
