Ipod Classic Question

I gave up on the touch and decided to go and get a Classic VERY soon. The added space & cost are the main reason.

I was wondering how I add my music to the classic. I will be using Itunes of course:shake: and my music is all organized in folders like *artist name-album name*. Most dont have M3U playlists save.

In Itunes will I be able to just load them in folder form and not need m3u playlists?

I have all my music set up in itunes already as far as loaded, cover flow organized and what not if that helps.

My last ipod was a 3rd gen 10gig and I never used itunes, just ephpod.

Thanks for any help.

If you use iTunes, you can kinda-sorta put tunes into your iPod in folder form, but...the thing is, they all have to be tagged. If they're untagged, you'll have a really hard time finding the songs.

Can't say for sure about 3rd-party import programs such as GTKPod, though...

All my songs are tagged properly. I just dont know if loading songs with itunes is the same as it was with ephpod. I plan on using itunes. I just dont wanna make a m3u playlist for each album I have. If I can just put the music in their current sorted folder form its great.

You don't need to make playlists for your albums. As was said before, if they are tagged properly, iTunes/iPod will have the Artist->Album->Song structure you are expecting built automatically and will let you browse and play in that order. It has several other pre-built orders as well (Album->Song, Composer->Song, Genre->Album->Song, etc.).

iTunes is close enough to how the music is presented on the iPod, so why not download it ahead of time and put your music into it see how it goes?

If I can just put the music in their current sorted folder form its great.A word of caution before adding your music to iTunes for the first time: If you have a particular organization style for the native files, note that iTunes will (by default) organize the native files the way it wants as:

..My Music
....iTunes
......iTunes Music
.........(artist)
.............(artist's album)
................(album's song)

If that's exactly the way it is currently organized before adding to iTunes you'd be OK. But you likely don't have your music organized under the "iTunes Music" folder, which means that when you add your music to iTunes it will create copies of all your music files and organize them according to the tags. Not a big deal, but you need to have the disk space and then you have to go back and clean up (delete the original files).

That is the default condition, but you can avoid that by un-checking two setting in iTunes before you add your music: In iTunes go to Edit/Preferences/Advanced and un-check the "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" options. That way, when you add your music to iTunes it won't create copies, move, or re-name your native files. Later on you could let iTunes take control and organize everything, but maybe save that for another day ...

Thanks for the tip. When I installed Itunes last week I made sure those were unchecked, nothing of duplicated.

Also I got my classic and the music loaded well. Only two album covers doesnt load in the ipod cover flow but does in itunes.:shake:
