Ipod Not Being Read

When i ejected my ipod properly the other evening, i found that my music, playlists no longer appered on the screen to me, it all appeard gone.
When i put my ipod back into my itunes, i got this message..
"itunes cannot read read the contents of the iPod "iBIFF" Go to the summery tab in Ipod preferences and click restore to restore this ipod to the factory settings."

While i have some of my ipod backed up, due to space constraitns on my laptop i don't have alot of it backed up and would restoring it wipe it completely off the ipod or would computer retrivial software manage to get it? It would be okay if i could copy all my music folders from the ipod onto my flatmates hardrive but i can't find a way for it to read the ipod

I looked at the ipod through the 'my computer' and found that the total capacity on the device in use was 19.2 GB which is what i have on my ipod in mp3s. However, when i got into the folders and then into the ipod control and music folders it says the folders are empty even and that the folders cannot be read and i should put my ipod into the H Drive.

Any help or insights are appreciated.

Restoring will definitely wipe out songs you have only on your iPod. Search the forums for how to get the songs off BEFORE you restore. As a rule, don't use your iPod as the only copy of your music -- if you plug into another copy of iTunes (e.g. on a friend's computer, that copy of iTunes will delete all your songs).

Are you viewing the hidden folders? Do you see the ipod_control folder? If your iPod is truly corrupted, the songs are gone. If it is just a library problem, then you need to follow the directions on how to view hidden folders and find the folder where the music is stored (as normal files but with odd names).
