ipod classic w/ existing aux-pod car connection
I'm thinking about ordering an ipod classic, but I want to make sure that it will work with my existing car connection first. I have a volkswagen passat with and after market PAC AUX-POD hookup (connects through CD changer in trunk). Is there any way to know if the ipod classic will still work with this? I have read the reports that it doesn't work with some older equipment, so I'd like to make sure.
Thanks.

If the AUX connection hooks into the iPod's headphone adapter then yes, it will work. If you plug the iPod into a dock connector for audio output then it may not work. It depends if your accessory has the "Made For iPod" sticker on it or not. Apple has long been switching to this route where you need a authentication chip in order to get audio and video out of a iPod's dock connector. The only problem is that now Apple is enforcing it with the new iPods. If your accessory has that authentication chip (I think all official "Made for iPod" accessories have it) then you don't have to worry. If it doesn't have that authentication chip in it then it won't work. Then again, that is all assuming you are outputting audio through the dock connector.

I've got the Peripheral iPod2car, which works similarly to the auxpod (I believe), as it connects through the changer of the cd and through the dock of the iPod.
After seeing the other reports of the classics not working (especially in the DICE), I was skeptical, but the iPod2car works great!

Yes, I think mine is similar to this one.

It does connect through the dock connector. If anyone else has more information please let me know. I paid a lor of money for the connector so I want to make sure I can use the new ipod with it before I buy.
thanks,

I thought it was just video that requires the authentication chip...?

I thought audio required it as well. Who knows, Apple has me all turned around with this crap.

Any device that passes audio through the dock connector should work. My Belkin Auto Kit works fine.

I'm thinking about ordering an ipod classic, but I want to make sure that it will work with my existing car connection first.
Why not buy one through a store like Best Buy that has a 30 day return policy?
If it means a potential sale, I'll bet you could talk a salesman into bringing a display model out to the car to try as well.

Well, here is an update on my situation in case anyone else has the same question.
The ipod will play through my car adapter, HOWEVER you can't scroll with the click wheel to select songs. The buttons on the ipod work, but scrolling is very erratic to the point that is it impossible to select what you are trying to. To change to a different album, I have to uplug the ipod, scroll to the album I want, replug the ipod and then press play.
Everything worked fine with my 4G ipod photo. I'm bot sure if the problem scrolling with the classic is due to all of the bugs or the "made for ipod" crippling that Apple applied to the 6G.

I actually have an unanswered thread in the "In Car Solution" sub-forum regarding this topic. I just bought the PAC ICP-IOP Pioneer adapter. And I wanted to get a iPod Classic in a month. It sorta matters to me if the Classic works with this adapter cable. I want to know if any of PAC cables work.
I believe the solution for Apple, is to make an "Apple Chip" adapter. It will plug into the iPod, and the adapter will have a dock input allowing use of non-Made for Apple accessories. I would pay for the adapter to keep all my existing accessories, and to keep the Pioneer adapter cable working. And Apple can make some money.

I think an adapter would be a great idea. Apple could make a lot of money bout on the adapter and more ipod sales.
# 11 Re: ipod classic w/ existing aux-pod car connection
I really like Apple products, but with their latest actions in bricking iPhones and requiring chipped cables to get full functionality from iPods I have to think twice about buying their products. I would not be impressed if I had to buy a $50 (it would probably sell for $75 Canadian) adapter to use my $200 car adapter that was designed to work with an iPod.
Makes you wonder what they'll pull next, require chipped cables to connect peripherals to their computers? Brick your computer because you choose to use open source software they don't approve of or you have modified/hacked OS X to customize it to your liking.

I own a acura tl with navigation. Because of the nav, very few of these adapters are compatible with it. However the icarkits has one that is. But the customer service rep said that i would have to unplug it from the charger in order to change playlists or albums. He DID say that a firmware update should fix this. I doubt there'll be one.
