New iTunes: any speed ups?
I see iTunes 7.4.2 was released on the 17th. I can't find a change list, does this update fix the "freezes" when dealing with a large amount of music on an iPod (especially with the 160GB)

No. It still needs over 30 minutes just to copy two albums on the iPod. It's really annoying.
But not everyone has this problem. There has to be a pattern, why the problem occurs and why not. So far we know, it's independent of OS and the iTunes settings. Maybe it is related to the size of the iTunes library. My library is about 80 GB. Anyone out there with the same amount of music NOT having the freezing problem?

I found that the more stuff I had on my iPod, the longer iTunes 'froze' when I connect the iPod and after I eject the iPod.
I guess it's understandable that it would take longer, the more stuff you have, but even with the 160GB classic one quarter full, it takes frustratingly long.

No they haven't fixed it yet, but the latest version does improve it but its still slow and it still freezes.

I don't see any improvement.

still crashes all the time for me. Really annoying!
# 6 Re: New iTunes: any speed ups?
I personally dislike iTunes, althought i am not that motivated to spend hours creating some new system to transfer to my iPod, so yeah I use it. It's a friggen resource hog though. It slows down ridiculously and just takes... fooorrreeevverrr to do anything. Plus it crashes my PC every so often, and I have a "decent" spec PC.
# 7 Re: New iTunes: any speed ups?
Right now I am trying to make a playlist and it freezes on about every other artist I select. If I go back to an artist that froze it won't freeze a second time so it is not bad files.
# 8 Re: New iTunes: any speed ups?
It really is amazingly bad this time around - before it was frustrating for those of us with large collections, but now it is almost unusable. CTRL click on 3 artists to select them and the program will invariably freeze for a minute. Thats when its not frozen for some other unfathomable reason. And sync and eject times? Well theres enough time to rip a whole CD collection now while you are waiting for it to eject your iPod - that is if there were any spare CPU cycles actually left over from iTunes to do anything on your computer. Chronic.

Its' really, really bad for me. Even with 2 gigs of RAM and a 2.2 Ghz dual core processor, framerates in cover flow dip down into the single digits. Pretty horrible. I hope Apple fixes this ASAP!
# 10 Re: New iTunes: any speed ups?
I wouldn't say it's really bad, but it is crashing a little bit and the music is stuttering even though I only have iTunes, Internet Explorer and Windows Live Message running!! :S :(
It never did this on iTunes 3x but it has been doing it since iTunes 7.4 (Sept. 5) :( :(

If anything, iTunes 7.4.2 is worse for me. I have the 160GB classic, which is about half full. I don't think it has anything to do with how much you have on the iPod. I have EXACTLY the same amount of music & movies on my 5.5 gen 80GB iPod. When I connect that iPod to iTunes 7.4.2, I have no issues whatsoever with the crashing/slow connect/eject issues. It is something specific with the Classic and it's beyond annoying.
# 12 Re: New iTunes: any speed ups?
I don't think it's new to the Classic. It's been slow for me since before I got my Classic, regardless of whether or not its connected.
Maybe it's a Vista thing? Vista is a huge RAM hog, and I wonder how much that affects iTunes.

I don't think it's an OS issue. I'm on XP SP2 and am having the same problems with iTunes as everyone else has posted. These problems are irrespective of OS - Mac and Windows users are experiencing the same problems, based on all the threads I've been reading here & on the Apple support pages.
# 14 Re: New iTunes: any speed ups?
So all that leaves is a problem with iTunes itself. I guess this makes sense, as everyone having these problems have different size libraries, OS's, and hardware. I hope Apple fixes this in the next release!
# 15 Re: New iTunes: any speed ups?
Do all of you with huge problems keep your music on your computer's drive? I keep mine on an external drive, and my computer is nothing special at all... a budget PC. iTunes still freezes, but not like some of the stories I've heard here. Certainly not for a half-hour. Maybe 5-10 mintues for a mild sync (maybe a few albums and a shuffling of playlists).
