iPod Classic Video Issue
I just purchased a new iPod Classic, the 160 GB version, and I love it, but I'm having an issue. This is my first time using an iPod with video, but I have a variety of mp4 files that I've converted myself and others I've downloaded from other places. The problem is that none of the files can be added to my iPod.
One file I even "converted to iPod format" (mv4) in iTunes on my desktop (OS 10.3.9, iTunes v.7.3), and when I transferred it to my iTunes library on my iBook (I have an older OS on my desktop so I can't connect my iPod to it), it wouldn't even open in iTunes, let alone transfer to my iPod. For the record, I had no problem whatsoever transferring my music over.
Anytime I try to transfer a video to the iPod, I receive this message: "[filename].mp4 was not copied to the iPod "PeaPod" because it cannot be played on this iPod. The files play fine in QuickTime on both computers, and in iTunes on my iMac (version 7.3). It's when I try to open it in iTunes 7.4 on my iBook that it becomes a problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Specs:
iPod Classic 160 GB
Mac OS 10.4.10
iTunes 7.4
Thanks!

Great find on actually finding a 160 gb. We don't have any 80 or 160 in the entire city! I can't speak to the ones you converted yourself , but the ones you got from other means. I will take that to mean places where several other people have tested the files. Are you able to play these files in itunes?

Don't use iTunes to convert videos. It never does a good job.
Go to www.videora.com and download it and use it to convert your videos, then just drag and drop them into the "movies" section of iTunes.

Hah, I was literally calling all 5 apple stores in my state to see who would be getting them. My last iPod was a 40 GB 3G with the scroll wheel, so it's a long time coming!
The thing is that they play fine in iTunes 7.3 on my desktop (which is OS 10.3.9), before and after I convert them to m4v. They also play just fine in QuickTime, so I'm flabbergasted as to why it's not transferring over to my iPod.

I've actually used iSquint (which I'm assuming is similar?) and it works fine. It's frustrating because the videos play on iTunes 7 and in QuickTime, but it becomes an issue with iTunes 7.4.

What are settings are you using to convert your videos? In other words; what video resolution, video bitrate, audio bitrate, audio frequency, and video format are you using? Keep in mind that the general mpeg-4 video format actually contains two different video formats: standard mpeg-4 and mpeg-4 AVC (h.264). We need to make sure that your encoded videos meet iPod playback requirements. It is strange that iTunes encoded videos don't work. Have you tried encoding the videos with the newest version of iTunes?
Keep in mind that both QuickTime and iTunes can play videos that aren't compatible with the iPod. So the ability of QuickTime and iTunes to play encoded videos does not ensure iPod compatibility.

I just converted an avi file to mp4 via iSquint with the following settings (I chose them by looking at the Apple site):
H.264 // 640x480 // 30 FPS // 128 Bitrate // MP4 // Default Frequency
I have tried encoding videos with the latest version of iTunes, and nothing.
The file plays in QuickTime, but will not be added in iTunes. I'm going to try the free download at iTunes to see if at least that works, but it's frustrating because I have a ton of videos I want to add.
Thanks for the response!

Oh, this is trouble. I too have used iSquint for converting my videos, and then I just updated to 7.4.1. Hmmmm, I'll have to keep an eye out for any updates.
iSquint was a getaround created by a third party. It's not surprise if it's not compatible with the latest update. Someone will find one for sure, but it is rather inconvenient. :(

Tell me about it! At least I have most of the original files I converted from. Do you by any chance know of a software that will work with the latest update? I guess it's still too early, but this is my first iPod with video capabilities, and I was really excited to use it. :/

Hey, are you saying you can't even play the videos in your iTunes 7.4 or will it just not add to the ipod?
No, I deleted all my files after the conversion except home videos (I think )

The mp4 files played fine before I upgraded to 7.4. Now I can't play any video files in iTunes at all, let alone adding it to the iPod. I think it's actually iTunes that's the problem now. Hopefully a new software update will fix this, but who knows how long that will take!

See, I can play my videos in iTunes using 7.4.1
I wonder what the problem is? I've gone through the majority of my vids to make sure, but I will go through all of them. I won't be getting the classic for another couple of months, so I hope any software issues are handled by then.

I should have waited, I suppose, but after 4 years with only part of my music collection on a black and white iPod, I was dying for something new!
I'm planning to take it to an Apple Store sometime this week whenever I find the time. For now, my 40 GB of music should suffice. :)

The issue is solved, if anyone had the same problem. I feel pretty stupid, but all it took was an upgrade to the latest version of QuickTime. Dur. Thanks to everyone that offered help!

I've tried using J. River Media Center. It works awesome when transferring music and images; videos just don't work. It converts them, and transfers them. They show up on the iPod (80GB classic), but don't play!

That is very weird how they show up on there but do not play. Maybe there is something wrong with your settings?
# 16 Re: iPod Classic Video Issue
Like, how? I've tried converting them to: iPod Native and iPod TV. Both don't work!
