Synbchronising One way

I have a 5th generation 80gig.

Have downloaded music, video and pictures and now would like to be able to delete them from my laptop as I also have them on a storage drive. But every time I sync it also takes them off the ipOD. I understand that I can Sync Manually but then how do I get new stuff added. Basically I want to add stuff to my Ipod but not take it off.

To manually add stuff to the iPod, just drop tracks or albums or playlists onto the iPod icon on the left side of the iTunes window. (You can also add tracks to pre-existing iPod playlists by dropping onto them.) You can create and edit playlists right on the iPod, too.

To remove stuff, just select and delete.

Alternatively, if you want to maintain the benefits of automatic synchronization, you could just consolidate your whole iTunes library onto the external storage drive. To do this, you simply change the path to your iTunes Music Folder to the external storage drive, and then use the Consolidate Library function to copy all of your music there and have iTunes update the references to it (see our iPod 201 article, Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to-a-new-hard-drive/) for more information).

iTunes will never remove a track from your iPod during synchronization as long as it's listed in the library database, regardless of whether the underlying file can be found or not. You would therefore have the benefits of being able to maintain a computer-based library for backup, but without occupying storage on your internal hard drive.

In this scenario, future music could either be added with the external drive connected, in which case iTunes would copy it to a proper location on the external drive, or you could add tracks with the drive disconnected, in which case iTunes would copy them to the default location on your internal hard drive. You could then re-run the "Consolidate Library" command whenever you connected the external hard drive to consolidate all music back onto the external storage tank.

This is the approach that I currently use with my MacBook Pro and a 2TB external storage array.
