Glass Screen
All the iPods have glass screens now, right? Including the classic? And also, how's the coverflow on the classic?

Can't help with the coverflow seeing as I haven't tried it first hand.
# 2 Re: Glass Screen
Nope, no glass screen. The coverflow is great, I really like it!
# 3 Re: Glass Screen
Mega lame about the screen.

I don't think a glass screen is really needed as the iPod classic's screen just doesn't go through the abuse that the iPhone/iPod touch do. A $10 clear plastic cover can protect the iPod's screen just fine.
# 5 Re: Glass Screen
Plastic screen..just grab the Agent18 case or a screen protector!
# 6 Re: Glass Screen
Cover flow is sweet with one tiny exception. Less I'm not seeing the options to do so. Cover flow only seems to work using your entire collection. It would be nice sort through Genre only. Or albums with covers only.

^nothing a firmware update can't add :)

How freaking hard is it to just throw a glass screen on the iPod? I really don't understand, I mean, is glass expensive?

Who knows maybe Plastic costs $10 and Glass $12.
Companies are cheap they can save a few dollars per unit they will.
That is why everything is built in China.

It just isn't needed as the iPod classic's screen doesn't go through all of the damage that the iPod touch's/iPhone's screens go through. That would be like a person running out and purchasing a H2 when all they need is a Ford Focus. Why put something on a unit when it isn't needed? Besides, I am sure the Chinese manufacturing plant had a million 5.5G screens laying around so they just decided to use those. Glass screens really only add to the durability of the screen itself in its ability to resist scratches. It doesn't really offer anything more beyond that. So why waste money on something that isn't needed?

It is needed. People don't want to be extra careful when they could just have a glass screen.

Do not need to sell me I agree but if Apple can save money they will

No, it isn't needed. Not when you can spend $10 to protect your iPod's front to begin with. Just spend the extra $10 and that will add to even more protection. Glass screens can still scratch, not as easily as plastic screens but they can still scratch. You would end up having to get a clear plastic cover anyways. Having a glass screen doesn't mean that you can use an iPod without a case. No matter what iPods are made out of, they still need a case. Spend the $10 for a plastic clear cover or spend $30 for a iSkin. Either one is needed anyway.

Yeah a glass screen is a real good solution..drop it and it'll shatter.
# 15 Re: Glass Screen
If you have a good watch it likely has glass.
Why because cheap watches with plastic scratch when you look at them.
Does the glass on you watch shattter? Nope.

Because iPhones are shattering all the time. Seriously, they know that people keep complaining about the screen, the next classic better have a glass screen. I mean, it's not even expensive!

Don't forget, people: glass scratches too. My iPhone has two pretty good scratches on the screen. I have no idea how they got there but they did prompt me to go buy a sheet of Crystal Film to cover the touch screen.
I'm sure that once iPod Touch ships we'll be flooded by posts saying stuff like "My scratch proof glass screen SCRATCHED!!!".
# 18 Re: Glass Screen
Hmmm, appleinsider has posted a full review of the new 3G nano where they appear to confirm that its screen is now glass. If thats true I'd be really surprised if they didn't go glass for the classic as well.
# 19 Re: Glass Screen
I have a 160 gig Classic in front of me right now and as near as I can tell, the screen is plastic.
# 20 Re: Glass Screen
According to iLounge's review (a website I trust a lot more than Appleinsider), the iPod classic uses the same screen as the 5.5G iPod and they didn't mention anything about the 3G iPod nano using a glass screen.
I just don't see why a glass screen is needed. Glass still scratches and it can scratch just as easily as plastic. Using the iPod in a good case will prevent scratches from occurring on a plastic or glass screened iPod. Seriously, a glass screen just isn't needed. Now, if the iPod classic used a touch screen then yes, I would say that glass is needed as you would be constantly touching its screen. However, since the iPod classic's screen won't go through the same abuse as a iPhone or iPod touch, then glass isn't needed.
If you were paranoid about having a plastic screen then you were paranoid for all the wrong reasons as a $30 case or $10 plastic sticky cover could have saved you a lot of paranoia. Glass screens just aren't needed for the iPod classic! Anyone who argues otherwise is probably just trying to find a flaw to complain about.
# 21 Re: Glass Screen
I'm not paranoid as I've never been that concerned with minor scratching on my 5G. I just polish it once in awhile with the Applesauce product and its pretty much as good as new.
I guess there is a perception that glass is stronger than plastic and less prone to scratching. Maybe it is and maybe it isn't but something I hadn't considered was the ability to polish out most scratches on the iPod plastic displays. I'm not sure that would be the case on glass without making things worse.
In any case my 80G classic has been shipped from Shanghai so I can see for myself soon enough.
