160GB Classic and InvisibleShield
I ordered the InvisibleShield directly from their website to protect my new iPod classic. I was just curious if anybody else noticed that the packaging clearly was originally for the 30GB iPod with video. There was a sticker that covered up the original packaging which read something along the lines of made for 160GB iPod Classic. I ordered directly from InvisibleSHIELD.com (ZAGG Inc). The only reason I was slightly suspicious is because it isn't a perfect fit - a little short on the sides. I was a bit upset seeing as how it was $24.95 + $6.00 shipping. Has anybody else had a similar experience? If you do have it, are you generally happy with it's performance? Thanks for the info!

It seems like all of the companies are doing this. Agent18 took 25 percent off their product but state that it's an exact fit. I would bet that these companies just make new packaging and use the same product.

My Best Skins Ever was expressly made for the Classic. I know this because I bought a BSE when I had my 5.5G and that one was different. For the Classic, there is an extra piece which is just for the screen.
Actually, I don't think a skin for the 5G would even work on the Classic, as it has a recessed screen and a one piece skin would leave a massive air bubble.

Is there a real difference between the Invisible Shield and BSE other than price?
# 4 Re: 160GB Classic and InvisibleShield
I've never bought an Invisible Shield, but others have stated they are the exact same thing. The only difference is that the IS comes with a little spray bottle of solution (with BSE you make your own solution using dish soap or baby shampoo + water) and is $25 vs $6-8 for BSE.

I've ordered mine during pre-order... So mine was actually one of the first batches... Mine also came with small dings on the back side that is in the process of being replaced (life time protection form IS)...
Anyway, when I installed mine, the front was exact fit... It was actually painful to get it to the point where running my fingers up along the side would not lift the shield off...
The back however, was a bit short... Although I don't think it was a huge problem... You might want to take a pic of it just in case we're judging "short" differently...
The reason why you can't have an exact fit in the back is because of the curves... I would imagine they have to make it a bit short so you can fit it without pulling your hair out...
The corner pieces I got (small circles) fit really well when I was done, overall, I was impressed with the shield... I'll write back when my replacement gets here sometime next week... If there is any difference between the first batch (pre-order) and this replacement...
IS had issued an email to pre-order folk stating they have had an increase of orders beyond their control... To those that had experienced delays, they offered 20% off all orders up to Oct 15th... I'm not sure if this pertains to all pre-order folk, but there is no way to find out / input a code on the website for redemption... Still, what I'm trying to get at is that they might have used unsold 30GB video packaging to ship out the new classic shields to avoid even further delays...
I didn't particularly notice any sort of "iPod" labeling on mine when I received it the first time...

The back however, was a bit short...
I notice the exact same thing. What I mean by short is 1.5-2mm before the black front starts which is another 1mm or so. This on all sides equals about 5mm or 1/2cm short. I know it is a relatively small area, but it seems possible for the iPod to get scratched on the unprotected sides (even if only a small area). Also - the front is 1 piece and the video screen is slightly recessed which made it very hard to get on without a bubble/liquid around the edges of the screen (still waiting my 24 hours to see if it dries out...) I'm dispointed to learn about BSE now (I suppose I didn't do enough research). I feel for the price involved they shouldn't have simply repackaged an older model and specifically advertise that it is the first case specifically fitted to the new iPod classics. (when you get your new package look for a white sticker that covers up any mention of the 30GB iPod classic)
I also received the e-mail for 20% off but of course it only applies to new purchases. (why would I purchase a new product after I already purchased the cover?!?!?!)

The BSE's are made precisely for the new models. Because I had both the 60GB old version which was slightly too big on the back, and the 160Gb version which fits as precise as humanly possible...
Also, regarding the old and new front pieces, the recessed screen is NOT a problem for a one piece cover... wipe the bubbles out and it fits and looks great...
I currently have the 160GB backing and 60GB front on my 160GB... popped that in a cheap silicone skin and it is glorious. I should post some pics so you can all see how well it can be done.
Also, this should clearly be in the cases forum... Mods, please handle. There is a thread there with pics of a well done IS on a classic....

Just slapped on one mine over the weekend. It's a tight fit but when it's done it looks great. It's also nice that it's very forgiving if you mess up. Pull it off, respray it, and try again. No more suran wrap for me.
# 9 Re: 160GB Classic and InvisibleShield
Yeah the screen recess isn't a good thing, but when mine dried it was no problem... In fact, when I ripped mine off to prep for shipping, the recessed screen lines stayed on the one piece front... So it molds itself to the shape of the screen really well...
As for the back, yeah I got the 1mm - 2mm of space but IMO it's really good enough for me...
As for the 20% off, I ordered a shield for my friend's nano 3G and PSP also... Just saying that I'm not sure if it even applied... I guess I'll email them after to find out...
I should have my replacement by Tuesday... I'll keep an eye out on the repacking issue...

# 10 Re: 160GB Classic and InvisibleShield
Ok, I got my shield back and quickly got to work on it...
Firstly, the package does have a white sticker for the 160GB iPod BUT it don't look like the packing was a relabel... It just looks like it comes that way...
Second... The shield this time around was a LOT (extremely) closer to the edges in the back than the last one... The front was a bit more laxed...
When I'm talking extremely close, I mean the edges on the top / bottom where the hold / dock are, the shield is virtually nano meters precise... I had to spend quite a bit of time to line the top / bottom up because there is NO room left... In fact, my dock side might have just a hair of it overlapping to the aluminum side...
However, the sides still suffer the same problem as previously stated... There are gaps about 1 mm on each side leading to the aluminum... Other than that, it was fine... This is my 2nd go around so I got the shield on a LOT better than I did the first time...
Trick as many have stated is to totally drench the shield when applying... If it can't slide on the surface of your iPod, then you don't have it wet enough... I also lift one end immediately after I secure the other end with the squeegee... Then I work my way back down with the squeegee to eliminate further bubble effects...
I'll take pics of the gaps I got with the 160GB... The pics I seen from here of the black 80GB was flawless as far as I can tell, but nonetheless I'm happy... I keyed the last shield I had plenty of times and it really does resist scratches as advertised...
They are also good on their word about the life time guarantee also...

# 11 Re: 160GB Classic and InvisibleShield
After a few days, I can say that the recessed screen is not an issue - it seems to have set around the edges of the screen perfectly. As I was applying the shield, the front was so close to the edge (i.e. perfectly fit...) that one of the corners had a difficult time 'staying down'. After setting, though, this issue has also gone away.
Regarding the stickers on the packaging - I carefully removed the stickers from my packagingn and it clearly says 'Made for 30GB iPod with video' under the sticker. I'm just hoping that they only reused the old packaging with new product rather than shipping old products and marketing them as new - which is a personal pet peeve of mine... Having said this, I'm fairly happy with the sheild with the exception of the gap on the back. (which as I stated, if brought all the way to where the front shield ends, causes a 1/2 cm gap on the other side - hardly a 'full body' shield)
# 12 Re: 160GB Classic and InvisibleShield
Just an update... I've since purchased a shield for my friend's 3G Nano, and his 30GB Video...
Let me just say us Classic guys are LUCKY to have what we have for shields...
First off, the shipping case for the 30GB I got didn't even have the same packing cardboard as my Classic... It was a totally different design picture in the back... Instead of having corner (circle) pieces like the Classic, they rely on a single flap, it looks ugly, and it's harder to align... The front however was a sinch due to the flat flat front face...
The 3G Nano had the same packing design with a white sticker lable on the bottom indicating that it beloned to that model...
Second off, the old 30GB Video's back cover was done REALLY bad... The way they designed the Classic's shield on the back side is a ton easier to install, and it ends up covering a lot more area you'd want protected... The "side gap" that's first brought up by the OP is times worst on the 30GB install I did...
Third... Installation on a 3G Nano was ridiculously hard... The back corner pieces would not stick for the life of me and the front piece was nano meter precise...
I'm actually not at home the last few days so the pictures would have to wait for the my iPod at least, but if you guys would see the results on the 3G and the 30GB, you'd find the Classic's shields are done with a lot more "thought" behind it... I appreciate mine a lot more now after installing on the others...
I'm about to do an install for a friend's iTouch soon too... Hopefully that isn't going to be a horror story...
