The Dreaded Folder with Exclamation icon

Hi All,

I have seen this talked about, but no resolutions, at least not without having the IPod repaired. My IPod ( 3G, 15GB ) was working fine, and then all of a sudden it shows the dreaded icon mentioned above. I think I may have removed the drive without ejecting it first, but I can't be certain.

I have gone into diagnostic mode and tested the hard drive, and it reports taht the drive is fine, as does the graphical hard-drive scan.

When I plug the ipod in, it is recognized, and I get a dialog box saying the software needs to be installed. Updater 2.1 comes up, and after a while says "Can't mount ipod."

I see the drive in My Computer, but double clicking on it says "Please insert disk into drive."

Updater 2.1 will not format it, even though the tests say the drive is fine. Windows will also not format the drive, complaining about an invalid parameter.

I think that the partition table is corrupted.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or do you think I should send it back to Apple?

Thanks,
Ian

When this happened to me what I did was:

1-Let the battery completely drain usually 24 hours and then try to get the updater to mount it.
2-Hook it up to the computer and use the updater and you may have to restore it to resolve the problem.

3- If the updater will not mount the iPod; what I did was:

A-reset the iPod by pressing the menu+play/pause at the same time.

B-plug the firewire into the computer and the dock (if there already plugged in then unplug and replug them in).

C-open the updater and see if it will mount it. If it does, then I 'restored' it back to factory settings not updated the firmware.

D-if it does not mount it then redo the process(a + b + c) over again. (What I did was repeat this process several times until the updater mounted my iPod, and it did, and then I restored it).

These steps worked for me when it happened to me and I got the info from someone else that this happened to and this is what he did to resolve the same problem. You will have to repeat this over and over again but you can get the updater to mount it as long as the drive is not damaged or has had a bad fall. Mine didn't so steps a,b, & c worked eventually without sending it in for repair. Besides it was on the weekend and late in the afternoon. So I took the time to sit and do this.

Also check out Apple support on this at:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61003

this page address' the Folder Icon with Exclamation Point.

If all else fails, then go for repair. But I suggest you try this first so if it ever happens again, I hope it doesn't, you will know immediately what to do plus the fact that your drive ok.
