n00b - converting macPod to WinniePod - Apple says "IMPOSSIBLE"
I have read a couple different FAQs saying it is possible to convert a macPod (I'm buying off of Ebay) to a windows ipod. I was sad to read what apple said ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60920#faq8 ). they say its "impossible". I trust you guys, but Apple would know what they are talking about. If any of you have done this or know for a fact that it IS possible, can you explain how? A simple "yes/no" answer is fine too though.
Anyway - I was about to buy a Mac iPod off of Ebay and I was just wonder what all ELSE i need to have to use it on my PC. i think the only thing included is the ipod and headphones.

I think they say that because apple wants you to spend more money and buy a new one from them.

I have a converted Gen 2 iPod (Mac to Windows) and it's been running fine for a year and a half now. The only thing you'll need is a FireWire PCI card if your PC doesn't have FireWire already. I use the Belkin 3-Port.
Oh, and I recommend Windows iTunes as the software of choice. I tend to still use WinAmp as my main player, but iTunes is great for iPod management.

Yeah, I had to convert all my wma's to mp3 to get itunes to recognise them... I was starting to get mad at it. I couldnt figure out whawt the problem was. Then it dawned on me. :D

thanks guys. so the firewire card would charge the thing as well?
what if i wanted to use my current USB card? is that possible?

USB won't work unless it's a 3rd gen iPod. 1st and 2nd gen iPods only support firewire.
Yes, it will charge. I'd actually recommend going that route. Firewire is just good to have on your PC.
Regarding converting - yes, it's totally possible. In fact all iPods come shipped as MiPods - part of the setup process for using it on Windows is converting it to a WiPod.
Apple doesn't tell you that - but it's what you're doing when you run the Updater program.
So, don't worry about it. The biggest worry you should have is buying off of ebay...
