iPod with Windows ME - newbie questions
Hi,
Sorry if this has been repeated in another thread but I've been getting really antsy after reading the threads related to Windows ME workarounds with iPod.
I'm expecting my new 15GB iPod to come via FedEx tomorrow and have already purchased a IEEE 1394 card in anticipation.
The sticky thread about the Windows 98/ME workaround is useful but I am still a bit confused about the following:
* It mentions that 3rd gen iPods come with the updater.exe software and it says to simply copy it over to the PC and run it (re: text of EDIT 2). Is that all there is to it? After that, will ME recognize it as a removable drive?
* The thread also mentions that iTunes won't work on ME and suggests alternatives. If all I'm looking for is to transfer my tunes from the hard drive on to the iPod, can't I simply do it via Windows Explorer?
* I've noticed the new plug-in for WinAmp. Will this provide me with the ability to create playlists for the iPod (since iTunes won't work)?
Don't get me started about switching to XP or 2000 from ME. I've been running the damned OS for the last 3 years without any major problems and my PC is just as old (a 566MHz Celeron)...the only thing I've been using it for is work, web, and music. I'd upgrade but there is no path from ME to 2000 and XP is a hog.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

No, you can't use Windows Explorer to load music onto your iPod and then listen to that loaded music on your iPod. The iPod uses a database to organize the music, not a folder structure (like some MP3 players use). As such, you need to use an application specifically designed to load music onto your iPod (iTunes, MusicMatch, EphPod, etc.).

Here's some help:
I myself have Windows Me as well and am very confused about getting started and transfering music. All I know is that when you buy the iPod, it ( I think) should come with v. 2.0.1. This version is compatible with Windows Me however iTunes is not compatible with WinMe. Now once you plug in your iPod is where I get lost. I believe MusicMatch works with Windows Me and that it should install onto your computer. Once your iPod has gotten familiar with your computer then you can start transfering music using Music Match(I think) or Ephpod which you can download at its website.

I used to have Windows ME, upgraded to XP for the iPod in fact. Ephpod works beautifully with ME, and I used it with USB - the only suggestion I have is that make sure you have access to a computer with XP or 2000 (a friend's, a relative's, whatever) jic.

# 4 Re: iPod with Windows ME - newbie questions
I have just received my ipod (20gig)... and have been reading through the forums on how to use it with Windows ME.... Am I correct in thinking that all I need to do is format the ipod on a "Windows XP" machine with the software supplied... I then can run it on Windows ME using the docking station module and USB 2 cable I bought with it ( i dont have firewire port) ?? ME unlike 98 & 98 SE does not need additional drivers to recognise storage devices. Anyone done this ??
** oh I forgot to add that i understand i would need to use ephpod as the software interface ** ( or a similar prog)

I have now a beautifully smooth working iPod on Windows ME.
1. Update / format the MacPOD on a friends XP Machine / 2000, only updater is required . You then have a Winniepod (windows Pod).
2. Install ephpod software available on this site v2.58.( On your Windows ME PC)
3. Windows ME unlike 98 / 98 se does not require any additional drivers . It will recognise the Winniepod as just another mass storage device.
4. Open ephpod select your ipod.
I use USB 2 it is lightning fast and have downloaded 306 cds to the winniepod using ephpod software without any problems.
5. Just an aside... on the US Apple site there is a new all in one Updater package for all ipods that I believe will allow your ipod to be powered via usb2. Along with other updates / benefits.

In addition you can use other software on Windows Me, like WinAmp plugin, MusicMatch, Anapod, MC9, X-play and some other titles. I believe that only iTunes doesn't work on Win Me.
