Advice on purchasing
Hi all. I am new to this forum and website; however, I've been considering buying an iPod for some times now, and I now know that this is the right mp3 player for me. I am stuck between the 15GB and the 20GB versions. Price favors the 15GB, but extra items favors the 20GB. My Computer is a Dell laptop running XP and that does not have any firewire or USB2.0 ports.
Questions:
Should I buy a firewire Card or just but the usb cable and transfer all the way down at the slow speed of USB1.1?
Should the 15GB(+remote) or the 20GB?(regardless of versions I would also buy the firewirecard or USB cable and an iCarRPlay)
If I get the 15GB what else should iI consider purchasing that the 20GB has?

If you get the 15 gig iPod, you wont get the Dock, Remote, or case.
The dock isn't really necessary. It just gives you a line out, and acts as a stand. Unless you are going to be hooking it up to a special set of speakers, or your stereo you won't need the line out.
The case that comes with the bigger iPods isn't that great. It is a basic black case that covers the entire front, and back. It even covers up the buttons. So you really need the remote w/ that case. It does a fair job of protecting it though. There are much better third party cases, that you may want to check out instead. Most give you access to the buttons, while still protecting most of the iPod.
I really like the remote. That may be because I use the crappy case that came w/ the iPod.
I would say go w/ the firewire card, unless you plan on takeing it to other computers. Since most computers have at least a USB 1.1 you can take your iPod to most computers, and hook up w/o a problem. If you aren't going to be trying to hook it up to another computer you should definetly get the firewire card instead.

I was in the same dilemma as you before I purchased my 20gig. I reasoned that since the 20 comes with $80 worth of accessories, plus the extra 5 gigs, it's the best value. I like using the dock, especially because it's better for stereo output. The stock case is overpriced for buying seperately at $40, but it's a good accessory to start out with. And buy a firewire card! The one I bough tfor my ipod was my first long term use of firewire, and it's great.

Thanks guys, I was leaning towards the 20GB + Firewire card anyways....I just needed alittle reassurance.....I Don't really go the way of cases. I have a $1000 Canon 300D that I just throw in a backpack. All I do is just take extra special care of my Precious items....I guess getting cases is an extra security blanket that i should look into
