Hey I got my ITALK last night!

Too bad it didn't work!!!

Plugged it in. The red light flickered as the manual said it would, but never got into any kind of "Voice Memo" mode or anything other than the ordinary IPOD screen.

The Troubleshooting section says to try resetting the IPOD, which I did several times with no luck. It also said to try disconnecting for one minute. Nope.

I can't believe I waited all these months to receive a fancy, one-inch headphone extension. The headphone jack is the only thing that serves any function on it.

Now that they're likely in the process of shipping thousands of orders out, how long will it be before I see a replacement? Another couple of months?

I'm not a happy camper here.

Thanks Griffin...

What Gen iPod do you have? I thought those would only work with the Gen 3s (and maybe Gen 2s but I'm not sure)? Maybe you just got a bum unit. Does suck though...

It's a 3G.

Are you absolutely sure that you have the 2.1 Firmware?

Look in Settings-->About on your iPod.

If you don't, then download the 2.1 Firmware here:

I have 2.0.2 Firmware. The manual says nothing about needing 2.1. Where did you see this as a requirement?
jhodgeiii at 2007-11-15 16:07:38 >
# 5 Re: Hey I got my ITALK last night!
Firmware before 2.1 doesn't have recording capabilities. At all.

# 6 Re: Hey I got my ITALK last night!
2.1 *is* a requirement... Believe me. :D 2.1 adds support for voice recording and the Belkin Media Reader.

You seem to be correct about it being missing from the documentation, though. That is something *big* that Griffin will likely add real soon once they get a bunch of support calls. :D

I got mine last night too and it works GREAT! I believe it says on the back of the box that 2.1 is needed. I'm going to post some pics of the iTalk in a bit.

Here's a pic of the back of the box.
I'm pretty sure it says it on the website too.

Yep. Did the firmware upgrade and it worked like a charm.

Thanks everyone. Saved me a lot of headache.

I do see version 2.1 required on the back of the box now too.

Not really too impressed with mine. Seems to record fine, just playback is seems really low and the speaker quite a bit weaker than advertised. I'll post a new thread for results.

I have one on pre-order . . . . . . . no e-mail from Griffin,
no nuthin,.... sob... :-(
No iTalk joy in Mudville!!

Text of my note to Griffin t'day! ;-(

I received my iTalk t'day. I'm so disappointed, I have no words. I had believed all the users who were c/o poor volume level were simply being too critical. Hear it across an office? I can't hear it at arm's length! Unless there are some level adjustments I haven't found, I'll be returning mine.
By far, my biggest disappointment is that every single Griffin product I've seen b4 was just top notch.

# 12 Re: Hey I got my ITALK last night!
I agree with the comment above. Griffin promised room-filling sound from this device. Maybe -- if your room is a sensory deprivation tank! At 50% volume it barely crosses the threshold of audibility. At 100% volume it is really only listenable at approximately arm's length.

It's voice memo capabilities seem to be on par with the Belkin Voice Recorder.

All things considered this is not the slam dunk replacement for the Belkin device that I was led to believe it would be. I remain disappointed.

Would some posts some file size info? MB per minute recorded?

Thanks

You should be able to fit 15+ hours of recording on each GB of HDD space.

Wow. I suspected it would be good for quick memos in the car, but one could actually record a lecture with the thing.

Thanks for the info.

Is the quality of recordings any good. Like if you record a person talking, and playback on computer, is it clear/close to perfect. I know it's not meant for music...
EvilDude at 2007-11-15 16:19:50 >
# 17 Re: Hey I got my ITALK last night!
I find the recording quality to be acceptable. By acceptable, I mean that it seems to fulfill why I bought it. I have yet to try it with a microphone. I really like it as-is though. If the speaker was as advertised, this little thing would be off-the-hook!

Tomorrow I will be using it to record a 1.5 hour investment class. That will help me grade its real value and quality. I'll let the thread know how it goes if you're interested.

I would like to know how it is for recording lectures and such. If it's good quality for that, then I will probably buy it here when it comes out (It costs $100 here! And I don't really wanna spend that much for an addon...)

# 19 Re: Hey I got my ITALK last night!
I tried yesterday to record on the iTalk using two microphones I had laying around from Aiwa cassette walkman devices, but neither one was recognized when attached.

Has anyone successfully used an external microphone? If so, what kind?

# 20 Re: Hey I got my ITALK last night!
jhodgeiii, how the the lecture recording come out?

The mic on the iTalk is on the front, rather than the end of the unit, like it usually is on personal recording devices. How does this affect usage? Instead of laying it down on the table, do you have to balance the iPod upright when recording a lecture?

# 21 Re: Hey I got my ITALK last night!
Well, first I will say that I sure wish I had better seating. I arrived first and sat in front, but the instructor taught from the rear of the class. DOH! So that left me roughly 25 feet from the instructor. I laid my iTalk down flat on the seat next to me and got it rolling.

The lecture was about 75 minutes. Using the digital-number battery hack (a battery charge value displayed between 1 and 500), this period of time used up about 70 ticks of consumption. Not bad. I felt that the instructor had an average voice tone. He was sort of diminutive, but did make a rather consistent effort to speak loud and clear. As far as the recording went, it was a success! The microphone picks up sounds very well (much better than any of my cheap household mics), and I had no problem with understanding the playback. I did have to pump the volume of the IPOD up to about 75 percent to hear better since I was so far from the teacher, but bravo!

I think I'm going to put away my old Panasonic microcassette recorder now. Being able to fast forward so fast through the recording is just SO awesome!!! Being able to record multiple sessions so easily and catalogue them will save me a lot of time and space too.

Overall, this thing is so worth it. Like I said in another post, if the speaker were stronger, this thing would be off-the-hook! But that's OK with me since I prefer private listening anyway. My strongest advice is rather obvious: get a seat closest to the instructor, or at least place the recorder near him/her/it if you dare, lest someone snag your IPOD!

Let me know if you want to know other details~~~

jhogeiii...how do you think it would go recording a guitar or piano in an ambient environment...would it give fairly true recording quality without distortion? i need a mike so i can record ideas and then maybe edit them on my pc...doesn't have to be brilliant quality but it sounds like the belkin can't even reproduce without distortion...

Hmm seriously considering getting myself one now.

It'd be very handy for recording classes.

# 24 Re: Hey I got my ITALK last night!
Hey bear, my gut instinct tells me that it might not fare well for what you need. The iTALK has some kind of distortion-minimizing logic built in that might filter out some non-speech sounds...

...but that's just a gut feeling of mine.

Can you hear me now?! Just got my iTalk and at least the mic works better than the Belkin (that's not to say it's anything to write home about). BUT the speaker... not happening. Is there something I'm not doing to allow sound to come out of the speaker (and yes, I've checked the volume)? I have the recording functions working fine, but my unit's mute - HELP!

Is anyone able to post a sample of a recording made with the iTalk? Do you think it would be suitable to do interviews with? Of course with an external and decent microphone...
CptDisco! at 2007-11-15 16:34:04 >
# 31 Re: Hey I got my ITALK last night!
Hey Danny, if nothing is plug into the top of the iTalk, that speaker should be *working*. Don't get yourself worked up in anticipation tho. ;)

And Cptdisco, I *do* think that the iTalk will be brilliant for interviewing, especially with an external mic. I'll look into capturing a recording for ya, but I need someplace to put it so I can link it. Perhaps someone else will get to it before I?

Could someone post up like a small audio sample from using the iTalk? I wanted to get one to record class lectures and so forth.

# 33 Re: Hey I got my ITALK last night!
Hate to be jumping in late on the non-working iTalk thread, but here's my problem:

I have a 10G, 3rd gen iPod (Model M8976LL) running firmware 2.2 with the latest update from Apple: iPod Update 2004-04-28

In the Extras menu, I do NOT have a Voice Memo option, and when I plug in my iTalk absolutely nothing happens. I contacted Griffin Technology and they had no suggestions, but they did send a replacement iTalk. Still no go.

Any ideas?
