Want dock connector to build own cable

Hi folks,

I'm a newbie, so please forgive this post if it's in the wrong forum (or just move it :).

I'd like to build my own cable to get line out directly from the dock connector (ie. not the dock) of my iPod 3G. Is there anywhere I can get the male dock connector to do this?

Cheers,
Jonathan.

I haven't seen any place to acquire them, short of cannibalizing an existing product. Sorry. :(

Therefore, it'd probably be easier for you to buy a Sik Imp (and cut off the power portion, if you wish).

dlifred,

I did this single cable mod based on Bing's directions:

http://home.pacbell.net/vsim/

Inside the 1/8" thick Apple dock cable, there is an outer braided shield, plastic wrap and filament strain relief wrapped in the white outer cover. Inside that, there are two insulated runs of wire for +/- and two more miniature (about 1/16" od) braided shields. Inside them, there are two *each* insulated conductor runs for L/R, common and another which I cannot ID. The wires are micro! Smaller than any wire you can imagine. Then you have to strip and solder them!

Believe azdude_15gb, the Sik Imp is the easy way to go unless you are very capable and/or have experience in this level of miniaturization. My cable was successful, but I would not recommend this nor do it again.

Thanks a lot. Now I know the situation, I don't think I'll be going down the DIY route.

Cheers,
Jonathan.
