Yoshida & Co. Porter iPod Case in Japan

I went to the Apple store in Ginza, Tokyo today to get a new case for my iPod. I had been using an Exo 2 silicone case, but after reading about the potential damage you can do by charging your iPod in a case, I wanted one that would let me remove the iPod and put it back in more easily.

I found one I liked so much, I got one in black for my 40GB and one in white for my girlfriend's 20GB: the Porter iPod case.

Porter is the brand name of Yoshida & Co., and is used for a pricey line of bags and cases of all types. Now they've come out with an iPod version. The case is made of a heavy canvas material with a well-stiched leather faceplate covering the face of the iPod.

There is no clear protector for the iPod screen, but because the case has a canvas flap that covers the whole faceplate, you shouldn't need one. The flap secures in the closed position by means of a band that stretches around the body of the case.

You can slide your belt through a flat, unobtrusive strap on the back of the case. Or, you can hook the included adjustable strap to a metal ring on the back of the case and sling it across your body or hang it around your neck.

The headphone cord pokes through a slit at the top of the case; this lets the case open and close well with the headphones plugged in, while not exposing the top edge of the iPod.

The case is big enough for a 40GB; for smaller iPods, you just slide in a thick plastic card in a hidden inner sleeve, and the fit adjusts perfectly. It's available in white and black. The price was high at 7,140 yen (about $70), although all cases in Japan are overpriced, even ones you can get elsewhere for much less.

In general, this is a hip-looking case, not too formal and not too casual, not too rigid and not too soft. I've attached a couple of pics I took with my digital camera. If anyone outside Japan wants one, you could probably contact the Apple store in Ginza and have them ship one to you.

hey, that's a cool case.. its different..

out of curiousity, what did you hear exactly about charging your ipod in a case? i see no reason whatsoever that would cause any damage... i know apple advises against it, but they dont say why.. it certainly isnt heat related because it doesnt heat up when it charges...

Heat is indeed the reason. When I load up my 40GB with songs, it is indeed quite warm by the end of the process. Not sure if this also happens when just charging, not loading songs, but I'm playing it safe.

Also, I forgot to mention that the Porter case covers the docking port on the bottom of the iPod, but that's an advantage for me since I take the iPod out to charge/sync anyway.

Apple advises that you remove the case for charging and syncing. Do they know best?

Don't be condescending. Obviously they're just mentioning it as a precaution to protect their hydes. Yes, it gets quite warm if you're transfering files. But plug your iPod into the A/C and charge it. It stays the same temperature. I charge mine in the case all the time. There is absolutely NOTHING even remotely damaging doing it...

ok, first of all, keep in mind- depending on the number of mp3's you are transferring to your ipod (it's still A hard drive!) it will get warm in the case or not. Thats just the way hardware works.

What's the story about exo2 cases?

Oh yeah, I don't care if gucci made this case- it is still ugly. IMHO.

The point is not that the iPod will heat up when transferring files; the point is, where does that heat go? Normally, it radiates from the metal to the air.

I think that's why Apple made the latest iPods dock -- so they stand upright with the metal surface exposed to the air. In a case, or even laying down, all that heat stays trapped in the iPod, where it can cause damage.

And for my money, the Porter case looks slicker than most leather cases (maybe not Vaja, but I haven't seen one of those in person). Plus there is no god-awful geek-alert plastic post-and-belt clip dealie on the back, just a simple flat band you can use if you absolutely must attach it to your body.

Here's a better pic of the black version:

The Porter case looks very nice indeed... too bad it doesn't come with a removable belt clip like Vaja's iVod because I find it to be an indispensable part of the case. If they sell the Porter in Canada I'll consider buying one. Thanks for the heads-up Skep!

Does it have a pocket to hold ID, credit cards?

It doesn't have a pocket meant to hold credit cards, etc.

You might be able to fit something in the slot used to adjust the size from 40 GB to 20GB iPods, though.
