Question about AppleCare service

I already posted a similar thread in the Service/Warranty forum but no one responded after 3 days so I apologize for posting this thread here since I really need help ASAP.

So my iPod's HDD went dead a few days ago, and I am still under Apple's standard warranty. Is it true that after 6 months from original purchase, if you need to have the iPod serviced you have to pay a 30 dollar fee? If this is true, if you buy the Extended AppleCare plan, would they eliminate the 30 dollar fee?

I think it is a bit unfair that under a "warranty" plan you still have to pay to get the unit repaired

Sounds a bit much - if it is still under the 1 year warranty any repairs should be covered by that warranty. But as you don't say where you are local laws may allow them to do this. As far as I can see there is no mention of $30 fee in their warranty blurb.
Why not phone Apple or go into a store and pick their brains?

here's a statement right from iPod support FAQ at http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/
How much will my in-warranty service be?
-Warranty service for eligible repairs is available at no charge for twelve months from the date of original retail purchase (?date of purchase?). A $29.95 shipping and handling fee will apply to all warranty repairs performed six months after date of purchase.
