broken headphone jack

Hey, I?m a long time ipod user, first time poster.
My 1g 5gb's headphone jack cracked today.

Much to my dismay, i called apple, and found I was out of warranty. I?m experiencing the problem where when the headphone jack breaks you can only hear the music in stereo. I think I read something about using a remote to fix this problem, the rational being that if you had a remote in the plug would have to be in straight, as the remote has a nice big groove to sit in. this may be an option, but I would like to look for a cheaper solution first. Back in the day I remember a product that was a firewire port cover and fit into the headphone jack as well, do any old timers remember this? I have these pictures, but can?t find it in a search.

my band teacher who has a 2G 20GB had a similar problem except his headphone jack loosened to the point where he just got crackling when he put his headphones in. I think its due to the way the jack on 1G and 2G is designed. My suggestion would be to find a cheap remote somewhere or try someone else's first to see if that would correct the problem. My teacher now refuses to use his iPod if the remote isn't plugged in.
