cd plays fine on itunes - garbled when ripped

I have used itunes to rip over 400 cds and for some reason, this one disc will not rip correctly. The first few songs play fine from the library once they are imported, but songs #4 and on skip, stutter and/or are garbled. I have re-ripped the disc 4 or 5 times, no improvement. I have tried encoding mp3 rather than aac and with various bit rates and sample rates, nothing. I have also tried the "error correction when reading audio cds" option and all that did is take a really long time to encode it badly. I have tried just encoding track 4, 5, 6, etc and that didn't work either. There are some minor scratches on the disc, but nothing any 10 year old disc wouldn't have. It plays fine off the disc in i-tunes, win amp, in a dvd player, cd-rom and on another pc. I've searched through the forums and I am surprised that noone has had this problem. Does anyone have any ideas or solutions or can point me to a thread that I might have missed?

I couple of ideas:

1) The CD could have some sort of copy-protection scheme. I've heard of some recent CD releases that have this "feature" that basically prevents them from being ripped successfully.

2) The CD could have some sort of enhanced-audio encoding on it that interferes with the ripping process. Someone posted a similar problem in the last few days.

I get this problem quite a lot- to the point where its happenning once per CD...one of the newer cd's did have a sticker on the cover explaining it was protected from copying however some of the cd's are years old and i still get it...again theres a few minor scratches but nothing out of the ordinary and they play fine on my pc and cd player...

unfortunately yet to find a remedy- where is the "error connection" option in i-tunes?

In iTunes, go to Preferences then to the Importing area, put a check next to the "Use error correction when reading Audio CDs".

use a ripper that utilizes the lame encoder.
EAC is a beauty...much higher quality than iTunes.
