Software communicating with iPod Problem!
I (along with another post today) have been having the following problem:
"The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software."
I re-installed using the repair function (as I had iTunes prior to buying the mini). The sync function worked once, then repeated the error. I am going to do a full reset using the disc tonight, however wondered where this problem is coming from...
.. and yes, I did install the software from the disc prior to sncying with iTunes.
I am on Win XP and own an existing iPod (20gb).. I purchased the mini for my wife and she uses it under her profile in XP (if that helps).

In C:\Program Files\iPod\bin should be the file. If you don't have it, then you need to install the ipod restore software (off the CD of the mini). Then to have it run on boot, go to Control Panel, Admin Tools, Services, and make sure the service is set to manual.

Sorry to post in this old thread, but its for the benefit of anyone using google to find the answer to the above problem.
I googled it and didnt find a sufficient answer. I solved the problem by doing the following:
In Control Panel, click Add / Remove Programs. Remove iTunes and any iPod software updates you have.
At this point you should probably (*technically*) restart the computer. I didnt tho. Go to the c:\Program Files folder and delete the folders named "ipod" and "itunes".
I then ran the iTunes setup program. At the end, again, you should probably restart. I didnt tho, just ran iTunes. iPod was detected correctly and updated fine.
I doubt there'd be any difference if you did restart in the correct places, I'm just impatient!
Hope this helps someone!

Hello - new member here. If you are using XP, I would like to second the opinion that you should first try checking that the iPod service is turned on. After Windows XP auto-installed some "critical update" (not SP2, that was a few weeks ago), I got the message about the iPod software not being installed correctly. It turned out the service had been disabled. (Thanks to Phil for identifying that!) I re-enabled it, started it, and everything was fine. Phew!
For those who would like explicit instructions, and are using the new XP Control Panel, choose "Performance and Maintenance", then "Administrative Tools", then "Services". Right-click on "iPod Service", then select "Properties". Set startup type to "Automatic", if it's not already. (Phil suggests "Manual", but I'm lazy - your call.) Click on "OK". Right-click on "iPod Service" again, then select "Start". You should be ready to go.
Hope that is of help to somebody!
