PC not recognising Ipod...but it used to!

I got my Ipod about 18 mnths ago - so I guess its a version 2?
(It has one big scroll wheel, rather than the buttons.)
Its a 20gb model with the 1.3 os installed.
in all this tme the Ipod has worked just fine with my Windows ME PC.
However suddenly my pc doesn't see the Ipod, where before i could see it easily in Windows Explorer or My Computer, and I could transfer files no problem.
What happens now is that when I plug in the firewire cable to the pc and the Ipod, the ipod makes a whirring noise and the apple logo appears. And that's it! I can reset the Ipod no problem, but when plugged into the pc, it just reverts to the apple logo. I've tried re-booting the pc a few times, but that doesn't make any difference.
The same thing happens when I try to charge it from the mains socket...the Apple logo appears and apart from a slight whirring sound (hard disk spinning?) nothing else happens...IE the battery charging logo doesn't appear any more.
Note that if I unplug the Ipod from the firewire cable, then reset it, I get the Apple logo, then the normal Ipod screen and everything appears to be fine...all my music is there, and it plays no problem. So the problem only appears when the Ipod is plugged into the firewire cable...but obviously if my pc can no longer see the Ipod, then it's not much good to me apart from listening again and again to the few albums that are on there at the moment
I've been really happy with the Ipod for all this time, and this is the first problem I've had with it.
Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is, and how to fix it?

Try reloading the software than came with your iPod.

Hmmm...I tried this, and the pc (and my laptop) still won't see the ipod. Everything else seems fine..the ipod will charge, so I guess the firewire cable must be ok. Odd. What could have happened to Windows, or the ipod to make this happen?

this is happening to me lately also...Fix was to manually put the iPod to sleep, then dock it. Seems ok now.

How did you put the iPod to sleep?
