What is your setup? Are you using only iTunes?

I am having the same problem, although itunes is not even giving me an error. I'm running XP with firewire & itunes only. Restored ipod 3 times with 2.1, tried using USB2, tried different firewire card... nothing. I can see the ipod under Windows Explorer, but iTunes will not detect and mount the ipod no matter what I do. I even tried another iPod. Reinstalled iTunes twice... total loss. My computer is not some junker either. Only solution I've found is to transfer my music over my home network to my girlfriends mac and load the music on to my pod there... and yes, the mac sees the windows ipod just fine!!! Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, BTW - the configuration worked fine for 5 months and this is a 40gig pod - just bought an iTrip, snapped it on the pod and then my pod crashed, next, the itunes problem...

I have the same exact problem as The Shank. I plug in my ipod to my comp (winxp) and itunes says theres something about the communication for my ipod is not working properly. I tried reinstalling itunes and nothing seems to be working. The only I guess that's different in my case i guess is that a safely remove hardware icon appears on screen... any help or suggestions would be appreciated...

Hi guys

I just had the same problem tonight, PC crashed, needed windows re-installing, after which Itunes was displaying that message :(

I tried using musicmatch to no avail.

After a bit of hunting i found this: http://www.ephpod.com/

It lets you use your iPod like a windows explorer window. Not ideal i know but it beats it not working at all!
It connects to your iPod for you and is working fine for me (so far, it hasnt finished copying my music accross yet, ill let you know how succesful it is!), so i thought id sign up here and post the link, cos i know how annoying this is! The real ####### thing is that it deleted all my music when i reinstalled the software so i was very ####ed off as you can imagine.

ps - it will promt you to download a mac drive reader - if windows is recognising your ipod and it shows up in my computer you dont need to get that software, just connect the ipod and click Next.

EDIT: This works perfectly, all of my music is back!!!!!!

I know that ephpod works but I am not a fan of it. I just dont like it because i am used to iTunes and its advanced set-up, much easier :) . I dont think reinstalling iPod software and losing songs on your iPod is the way to go. What i did to get mine to work was to go to the control panel/add remove programs (windows)- then go to remove iTunes and it asks me if i want to reinstall or uninstall so i chose reinstall: it took about 10 minutes but after that it atleast recognized my iPod.

yeah i tried that too but it didnt work at all for me, and because my computer had to have windows re-installed i had no choice but to wipe my ipod as far as i know :( I'd much rather iTunes worked as well, im hoping someone knows the preoblem and is able to fix it, its so much easier then ephpod.

I tried using ephpod but it will only let me put one song on my ipod and when i try to add directories of music from my documents it says there isnt enough memory even though i have plenty to spare. does anyone know why its telling me this?

I had similar problems...this is the only solution that worked for me. I only mount and unmount my iPod while iTunes is already up and running. Whenever I mounted my iPod without iTunes already running, it would crash...but now it seems to be working fine with this strategy

I'm having the same problem. I've even replaced my ipod under warranty (because the battery wouldn't charge) and still nothing. I've reinstalled and deleted itunes utold times with no luck. so i decided to use anapod but the activation # they gave me wont work. still waiting for a reply back from the anapod people.

I hear that iTunes doesn't like fast user switching in XP. Try logging out of XP and logging back in, or even simply restarting your computer when you get this error and see if that fixes the problem.

Obviously don't know if you've sorted this yet, but I had the same problem.

This is one of the possible things that you can do (I would advise you to back up all your music to another machine first though as you may need to go into windows explorer and reformat your ipod). I got this from Apple Help Desk in Europe. This is their article.

TITLE
An "iPod Service Error" alert or "Please Reinstall iTunes" message appears in Windows Article ID:

------------------------
TOPIC
In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, your iPod won't be able to work if the iPod Service doesn't load or conflicts with another service.

------------------------
DISCUSSION

You may see symptoms like these:

An "iPod Service Error" alert appears when you open the iPod Software Updater utility.

When you open iTunes, this message appears, "Software for communicating with the iPod is installed incorrectly. Please reinstall iTunes."

You see iPod in My Computer, but not in the iTunes Source list.

There are three possible solutions. Start with the first one and proceed in this order until your iPod works with your computer.

Reinstall iTunes

Most of the time you can fix these symptoms by removing and reinstalling iTunes.

Remove iTunes.

Download and install the latest version of iTunes.

Update iPod with the latest software for your model.

If your iPod still doesn't work with your computer, proceed to the next solution.

Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items

This symptom could be caused by conflicting System Services and Startup Items. You might be able to resolve it by disabling some items with the System Configuration Utility in Windows XP. This utility is not included with Windows 2000.

Important: Disabling third-party System Services and Startup Items can prevent some software on your computer from working correctly. If following these steps resolves the issue, you may want to use the System Configuration Utility to turn on the third-party System Services and Startup Items one or a few at a time (and then restart) to identify which System Service or Startup Item is conflicting with the iPod Service. Turning them all on may cause the symptoms to recur.

Click the Start button and choose Run. A Run window (command prompt) appears.

Enter "msconfig" without the quotation marks into the Open field and click OK. The System Configuration Utility opens.

Click the General tab.

Click the "Selective Startup" option.

Deselect the "Load Startup Items" option.

Click the Startup tab.

Select the "iTunesHelper" option in the list.

Click the Services tab.

Make sure the "Hide All Microsoft Services" option is selected.

Deselect all the items in the list except the iPod Service and the Gear Security Service.

Click Apply.

Click Close. A System Configuration message window appears.

Click Restart.

If your iPod still doesn't work with your computer, proceed to the next solution.

Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items and reinstall iTunes

Rare cases of this issue may be resolved by reinstalling iTunes after using the System Configuration Utility in Windows XP to disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items.

Follow the steps above to disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items. In step, 10 also deselect the iPod Service and the Gear Security Service options.

Sorry for the long winded nature of this, but it worked for me.
