iPod will not sync with iTunes

I got the iPod mini in the mail a couple of days ago and it seems to work fine. I put in the disk that came with the iPod mini and downloaded all the software. Then whenever I run iTunes though, a little error pops up on my screen that says:

"The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software."

I don't know what to do. I have uninstalled everything relating to iPod, and iTunes and installed it again and I get the same message. I had iTunes before I got the iPod and installed it again, then erased the old one, because I only needed one of them. Other than that, that is all the information I have, except that I have a vague recolection of clicking the "restart now" message that comes up when the installation is complete, then seeing something behind that screen that was an incomplete download. Even so, if there is any help that anyone can give me, it would be GREATLY appreciated. -Thanks-

It would help to know what kind of system you are on. Mac or PC? What OS?

Do you have any firewall or antivirus software running while the install is taking place? Those sorts of programs are notorious for interfering with downloads and installs.

Actually, I called the guy on the help phone line and he said it was because it wasn't installed properly the first time. But thanks for the help anyway guys. By the way, I was on a PC.

Thanks.

I have reinstalled the software many times and it still do not work. I installed Xplay and it works. But I don't really like Xplay. I would like to use iTunes.

Maybe you should try exchanging your mini. Never hurts while you still can...

In case anyone was wondering how I fixed my problem, here is how I did it. My mother called the help line while I was away. The guy that answered apparently guided her through the installation process and asked her to delete some files also. The problem in the first place was that the software wasn't installed properly the first time, and if it isn't installed properly the first time, then other attempts are likely to fail too. Here is the number that she thinks she called. Please message me if it is not correct. (1-800-275-2273). Here is the message and context it was in, just incase you dont want more info:

This is what I had to do to get it to work:

1. Remove iTunes using Add/Remove programs.
2. Trash these folders:
C:\Program Files\iPod\bin
C:\Program Files\iTunes
3. Restart the computer.
4. Reinstall iTunes.

I was also having the problem listed above. Basically, whenever I tried to transfer a file, the name of the file and a progress bar would show up in the little screen thing at the top of the iTunes window but then it would disappear after less than a second. The transfer was clearly aborted for some reason. From time to time when I had restarted the machine I would sometimes get the message about the iPod software not being installed properly, but reinstalling never helped. I called Apple and they told me to do what was already mentioned above. That still didn't fix the problem. Not surprising since I had already uninstalled and reinstalled 4 or 5 times. But then I remembered that I use XP's file encryption on my My Documents folder which contains all my music files. I decrypted all those files and now everything works fine. I wish I would have gotten some kind of error message from iTunes. When I copy files to my USB memory key, I get a warning telling me that the encryption will be lost by coping the files to the memory key but I got nothing with the iPod...
