Mac died -- need to restore "play count" info...
My Mac died on me the other day, and it was so screwed up, it required a complete re-formatting. So naturally I lost all my iTunes data, and associated playlists and play counts and song ratings etc.
The lucky thing is, all my MP3s were stored on a separate FireWire hard drive, so at least I still have all my songs safe.
And because I had my iPod set up to auto-sync with iTunes, I still have all my playlists and play counts and song ratings etc for all my MP3s on my iPod.
But now the problem I have is this: I really make extensive use of the "play count" data to determine my Smart Playlists, and if I were to just drag all my MP3s from my external hard drive back into my now empty iTunes window, all the play count data would be read as being zero for each and every song.
But on my iPod, I DO have the correct play count data -- because as I said previously, I had my iPod set up to auto-sync with iTunes.
So is there any way I can get my play count data and my Smart Playlists and my song ratings FROM my iPod and INTO my iTunes...? Please note, it's not the actual songs I want from my iPod -- those are safe on an external hard drive -- it's just the play count, playlists, and ratings I want for the songs that are already there.
If I DID just drag all my MP3s from my external hard drive back into my now empty iTunes window, and then connect my iPod (set to auto-sync), would I be correct in assuming that iTunes would update my iPod's songs with zero play count info -- and NOT the other way around, so that my iPod would update my iTunes song's to the CORRECT play count info...?
Please, if anyone knows how I can get my original set-up back, do let me know -- I would hate to have to go back to a zero play count for all my songs...

Just bringing this back up to the top...
Surely someone out there knows the answer to help me out here... Guys?

No-one...? Aw, come on -- I don't believe it....

Well, I don't know the answer. But you can start by getting software that allows you to see the hidden files on the iPod from the lounge homepage under downloads.
You may be able to some sort of database/xml file. I don't really know but its where I would start.

Thanks, but I tried that, and the XML file that I have on my hard drive that contains that information is not duplicated on the iPod...
Any other possible solutions?

When reinstalling iTunes on the HD I would deactivate the automatically update and go instead for manually manage, at least in the beginning.
Then use ipod master or ipodviewer to transfer the songs from the ipod to your HD and reload them into iTunes. I am guessing the post counts will be there, taken from the iD3 tags.
There are other possibilities with apple scripts, see this link: http://www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/scripts/scripts08.php
Since I've never had to face this problem, don't know for sure.

Unfortunately, in this instance, the play count info is not kept in the MP3's iD3 tags, but rather it is kept in an external database file.
If the play count data WAS kept in the MP3's iD3 tags, then when you "borrowed" someone else's MP3s, you'd get their play counts in your iTunes set-up -- but you don't...

See, didn't know that. Have you checked the apple scripts page?
# 8 Re: Mac died -- need to restore "play count" info...
i had this same problem, and i thought that this program i synch itunes would work, because that is exactly what it said it would do, but unfortunately the program won't launch on my computer (10.2.8)...

There must be some database type file on the iPod. The playcount info is not only on the iPod but is updated on the iPod, so there is one.
I don't really want to poke around mine for no reason or I would look too.
What other files do you see?

Shermanash -- where can I find a copy of this programme you mentioned...?
MikeM -- there is SOME kind of database file on the iPod as far as I can see, but whereas the one on my Mac is an XML file, the one on the iPod would APPEAR to be some kind of Unix Executable file... And I would have no idea how to marry the two up...
Any AppleScripts I could find on that website seemed to me to only update one song's play count at a time, and with nearly 8000 songs on my iPod, I'm looking for a much quicker solution...

I thought I remembered reading that iTunes doesn't use the XML file to update itself, it creates the XML as an aside. Someone tried updating their XML and it didn't change anything in iTunes.
Can you find the same file in the iTunes package contents directory on your computer as the one on your iPod?

Hmmm, looks to me like the Append iPod Play Count to iTunes Tracks script on Doug's AppleScripts page should do the trick:
http://www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/scripts/scripts08.php
This script will add the Play Counts of either just the selected tracks or all tracks on an iPod to the corresponding tracks in iTunes. (For users who manually manage their iPod tracks.)
