I have several types of playlist. Some automatic Smart Playlists...
* By rating: 3+ stars (most variety), 4+, or 5+ (only my favorites)
* By "least-recently played" my FAVORITE--on shuffle play you get a nice mix of music you thought you'd forgotten!
* By Newest Added.
* By a set of all my favorite Artists, and by each alone.
* By date: 80s, 90s, 2000s
And some manual mixes I've dragged together:
* Covers (songs sung by artists other than the original performer)
* Remixes (fun alternate versions of songs)
* Sets of songs that share a "mood" or "feel" and just go well together. The modern "mix tape."

What more help do you need?
Apart from the usual categorical stuff (artist, genre, album, etc) I've made some Smart Playlists based on info I add in the Comments field. I'll pick out certain tunes and enter "easy listening" in Comments, or "solo tuba", or whatever, and then start a smart playlist that only includes those phrases.
Just start experimenting. They're only playlists, and if you end up with something you don't like, you can delete any playlist without fear of messing up the music files.

To get what you might like, you will need to create a smart playlist that combined multiple options. For example, I have one list that is songs with three or more stars and last played date greater than two weeks ago. I play that random most of the time, and just hit skip if something comes up that I'm not in the mood for.

it took me a while to rate all my songs, but the stars rating is really great. All the songs that I absolutely love is 5 stars. When I have my "5 stars" playlist on, I find that I don't hit skip ever. I enjoy every songs.
You're request is very vague. Maybe we can help you better if you describe a situation for us. Are you in the car? At home? Walking the city streets? What kind of mood are you looking for?
