Will the mini eventually come with larger GB drives?

So the dilemma is somewhere between getting the mini now or waiting until a 6 or 8GB version is available? Anybody hear of rumors? Or can almost definitely say that the larger drives will be coming out (and how long)? Thanks in advance.

I'm sure we'll eventually see them with bigger drives...maybe as soon as 6 months from now.

breukelen--

Buy now! The problem with waiting is that in technology products, there will always be something a little bit better just around the corner.

I got my 15gb 3g iPod in late July 2003--just a few weeks before Apple started selling the 20gb for the same price as my 15gb was. Admittedly, I was a little irritated, but I still love my 15gb iPod, and don't regret my purchase.

There was a rumor (back before the mini was announced) that a 2 gb version of the mini was on the way.

You can expect that when hitachi makes larger 1" drives it will find it's way into the mini. Noone knows when that will happen though.

I agree. I'm planning on getting a mini soon, after I save up a bit of cash.

Hey, stark23x... off topic, but I needed to ask. How did you get that caption below your name instead of it saying "junior member", "member", or "senior member"? I just posted a thread in The Lounge about it, but noone's answered it yet. Is that reserved for the super-seniors or moderators?

The more interesting thing to think about is what will happen when there are huge capacity 1'' drives available to fit in a mini. No more iPod? I tend to think that the larger iPod as we know it today will eventually migrate to being in the mini form factor and the iPod will become a different, more versatile device that includes a color screen etc...

I agreewith messiahtosh, I envision the iPod form factor becoming a multi-purpose device, such as a video player as well with larger 60/80 gb capactity in the next 2 years, while the mini will stay a pure music player that might go up tp 10gb in the next 2 years.

It's really dependant on how much smaller or how dense the platters can go.

Eventually, yes. It is inevitable.

But hopefully not too soon. So I don't feel bad about getting the mini right now.

My best guess is that they will not upgrade the memory size this year. Instead, I think they will drop the price by $50 later on in the year (maybe July or onward?), so more people have reason to buy one from the general population, and more initiative for already-iPod owners to get one. A HD increase would probably occur in 2005 or at least close to 2005 if the price drop took place.

If the HD increases a lot there will no longer be a mini, it will become the iPod.

I'm sure there will be an increase in size within 12-18 months, but the first thing that will likely happen is a price drop to $199. Apple knows that $249 is too close for comfort to $299, and they're probably just waiting until the manufacturing costs allow a $199 price.
