Cigarette charger straight to +12v cable?

I'm in the process of mounting my Ipod's dock into the dash of my 1977 VW camper.

Like others on this board, I'm hesitant to have wires hanging out of my dashboard, so I'm planning to wire up a Griffin car-charger behind the dash.

My question is - do I have to go through the process of installing a cigarette lighter socket behind the dash as well, then plug the griffin charger into it? Or can I take the Griffin charger apart and "hard wire" a +12v battery supply and earth directly to it? As this is an old vehicle, finding battery supply cables under the dash isn't a problem!

I thought it sounded simple enough, but then I thought that cigarette lighter sockets may have fuses integral to them?

Any suggestions would be great.:D

There is most likely a board or something in the charger to stablized the votage for the ipod. you could hardwire and it would work fine, but I would a little hesitant. Just solder straight to the plug if don't want to install a jack. Heck the jacks are only a few dollars at radio shack and you won't be permnantly destroying a perrfectly good charger.
