Mood Playlist

I'd like to see a way to automatically sort my libary by the mood of the music. It would be the ultimate playlist just use the wheel to "dial a mood". Could a waveform analyzer look at the files and say use beats per minute as a way to sort music? At the very least a system level tag and access to the "dial a mood" wheel. Then people could start adding this to the CDDB. There are folks out there that use the ratings to sort this way so it can be done. I'm just lazy and want it to happen with minimal input.

Lol, I know how you feel. But I think mood-determined playlists is something that is going to be very difficult to be made automatic, mainly because, everybody is very different.
For starters, what do you actually mean by "the mood of the music" - whilst you could say, "well this song sounds happy, this one is sad" I would say most songs aren't straightforward specific moods. Plus it comes down to individual interpretation of what different moods actually feel like. Plus, I'd have to say even if you could say that different songs sound happy or sad or whatever, I can't see the use of it really, because you don't neccessarily want to listen to sad-sounding songs when you're feeling sad, just as an example.
Just my thoughts...

simply put the "mood" (as you see fit) of the music in the "Composer" field of the file.

Yes I think a true mood, happy. sad, etc. would be near impossible at this point. Thats why I suggested using beats per minute instead. It is something that is much more objective and could be sorted by an algorithim. Maybe it shouldn't be a mood list but a tempo list. If such an algorithim could do some percentage of the work (60+) you could enter/change the rest similar to ratings. I think you need the control access and a headstart. As for listenin to sad songs when your sad, thats up to you. The rating would be for the song, you'll still have to pick which ones you want to hear.

Although what was first suggested will be impossible, even with Bpm, there simply cannot be a program good enough to analyzw this automatically. Ever. Fact.

But the best option my old friend is to Put the mood in the composer field as previously suggested and then put shuffle on to play the selection.

I've actually thought about this many times, only it would also include a blood pressure analyzer and a really cool set of headphones that connects around your temples and chooses appropriate music based on your mood and taste. However, you'd either need a large collection of music or perhaps there will be some futuristic collective library of music accessible by all iPod users, once again proving that the RIAA is going to have to eventually give up their cause.
