4th Generation in June!
At least thats what I think (and I'm pretty certain). HP is releasing their Digital Music Players based on the iPod in June. Obviously the colour is ewww and no one would want to buy one unless they dropped the price or something. It will be a cost effective solution when the 4th Generations will be released!!! They will sell the HP 3rd Generations for less!!! Can't wait till June lol!

but then they will turn away orders for the HP iPod and then they will lose money. That would be the stupidest thing to do, release two products one right after another, you will lose millions on the HP and get maybe half a million from sales on the 4g ipod.

not neccesarily...not all people like new technology...some people like tried and true technology...if Apple releases a new ipod after HP releases a version of the ipod then HP could appeal to PC users with cheaper ipod prices.
# 6 Re: 4th Generation in June!
but if they released the HP iPod first waited a few months to capitalize on revenue from that specific device then released the 4G iPod they would make a lot more than if they released both at the same time.

HaHa this will never happen. Like others said it will not be cost effective. The people that get paid alot in apple will not want to lose their jobs by somthing this stupid. They should get the Hp one out, then when sales start to drop get the 4G out.
# 8 Re: 4th Generation in June!
Uhm, for some reason, people here seem to think that Apple will will be in competition with HP, once their version of the iPod is released. Consdeirng it's their product that HP is licensing, I think Apple would still turn a profit from selling them. Further, since I assume the products would be similarly priced, why would they need to somehow make the Apple version better than the HP version?
It's beneficial to Apple if both products matched in specs. If they make the HP version inferior, then no one will buy it, Apple AND HP will lose money on the venture, and the business relationship will sour. And it's obvious why Apple wouldn't want to make their own version of the product inferior to HP's.

I think it's pretty obvious that the 4G ipod is going to come out sometime this year, but what I don't understand is why everyone assumes that HP will be left with the 3G design. Is there any reason to believe that HP is going to sit back selling the old design like a sucker?
It seems that there are two possibilities
1. HP will use the 4G design and release them at the same time as Apple does or slightly afterward.
2. HP will start selling the 3G design fairly soon and Apple will not be releasing the 4G design for quite some time.
Hopefully #2 is wrong because I am waiting (impatiently) to upgrade from my 2G to a 4G...

Another theory...
If HP and Apple sells the same generation iPod at the same time, why would I, as a consumer, want to purchase an iPod from HP? Certainly the different color is the only possible attraction, but it's an ugly color even then. The only reason a person might get a HP iPod over the Apple iPod is if there's a significant price difference. Either by HP bundling it with their computer system, or selling them separately.
In case if HP sells iPod at a lower price, that will hurt Apple's sale, there will be people who are willing to take the ugly color to save a few bucks.
Hence if HP sells iPod individually at a lower price, it would make sense that Apple would be providing 3G iPod to HP, while making 4G iPod for themselves. That way any price difference is justified, and the market segmentation is clearly established.
Also, without knowing the exact contract underneath, Apple is most likely either selling iPod to HP at a wholesale price, or taking HP orders and manufacturing on a per-need basis. Given production runs for iPod in general, iPod has never been manufactured on a per-need basis, it's always been a batch production run (in fact, no Apple product has ever been made that way, all the Apple computers are made in batch production runs).
So it's more than likely that Apple is giving HP a wholesale price, and it is up to HP to empty the inventory, which doesn't do anything to Apple's bottom line if they don't sell.

It is already confirmed that it will be left at the 3G design the movie at ZDNet showcases the iPod as a 3G Blue color.

The HP iPod IS a 3g ipod. Pictures have been released, and it is exactly the same as the current 3g except that it is a medium shade of blue.
# 13 Re: 4th Generation in June!
Just because pictures has been released doesn't confirm that the final product is exactly that...
They could very well just made one prototype to show what is possible and get the media engine moving as well. Just like most prototype cars that gets shown at auto shows never see the light of production.

I have most respect for Apple, but it's not really the most known brand in most European countries. In fact, Ipod isn't that well known either. I've been living in the States for some time and I was surprised by how omnipresent Apple was everywhere, but here I've heard plenty of times about Apple products being a strange kind of computers, expensive, and non-compatible with most other products.
But hp is much more extended (here). So, solely brand name is a good reason to choose hp over Ipod, and a good reason for hp to produce it. I myself think it wouldn't be a wise election (specially being Ipod an original product from Apple), but that's the way marketing works.
Anyway, I suppose there will be some differences between both products. It really doesn't make sense to sell two identical products at the same time.
My wish: that hp would add some of its pda functions to its product (I'm not meaning multimedia functions, that would made the battery useless for sure, but for example, more support for any text, maybe bluetooth for some occasions, things like that) :)

I didn't see anywhere in either of those links that the 4g will be released, just the HP iPods... I think the 3g HPods and the regular iPods could work fine together on the market. The 3g is designed and ready for HP computers and the iPod can be used for the mac or pc.
# 16 Re: 4th Generation in June!
there is no way HP paid millions for a deal where they would sell the previous generation iPod while apple sold the latest and greatest. HP is counting on selling millions of iPods for 2 reasons... 1) some people may not buy iPods from Apple thinking they are "Mac stuff" and 2) some people may not be very gadget savy and just hear about hPods from HP when buying their new computer.
the iPods/hPods sold will be of the same generation but with different colors and perhaps different amounts of memory and included cords (i bet all hPods come with the USB2 cable something iPods don't (well the mini does.))
# 17 Re: 4th Generation in June!
I really wish they would make an announcement soon as to the release date of the 4G iPods.
I have about a week left on my 30 day Best Buy return policy and if the 4G's are coming out soon I'll return mine and get a 4G.
A colour screen really doesn't matter to me but I would like to have the 'mini-style' click-wheel.
I don't suppose anyone has any more recent rumours or speculation as to the 4G release date.
