Some people say yes... some people say no. Technically, you shouldn't need to. But if this is your first set of canalphones, some people figure that your ears need to get used to the sound, and so there will be some "burn-in" in that regard. If you want to be safe, just take the usual route and play some bass-heavy music at slightly higher than normal volumes for 48-72 hours.
What phones did you get?

the ones from apple... I don't know if they are the best for the money, but they were a pretty cheap way for me to figure out if I like the feel of in-ear 'phones. You know, before I get some Shure E3cs! ;-)

should have gotten the fontopias. i think they sound a lot better, stay in your, and are better at keeping out noise, and they are the same price

you don't need to burn in earphones because the components are so small. burning in is recommended on full-sized headphones where the coils need to be broken in, as they tend to be stiff and less responsive out of the box.

I'll keep that in mind. I might need to get some better ones, I don't think that these sound good enough. Then again, I don't mind exparimenting with $35 headphones. Thanks again.

Yeah I just got mine today. The sound isn't as great as I had hoped. The original earphones for the iPod sound better, i sure hope these 'break' in and start sounding better.

ohhhhhhh... just got my Shures today and they are so SWEET. Once you get a proper fit (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7033) they sound just superb - worth every cent. I didn't have any trouble with the in ear aspect of em and they come with different sleeves to cater for every ear canal.

I love my Apple in-ear.
I find that you really need to push them in..even when you think they are in far enough. I also find them sounding much better a few days after you first use them. I love them and do notice a significant upgrade over the stock earbuds.

Concerning the new Apple in-ear buds, I've found the sound and fit improves dramatically if you replace the provided silicon caps with those from the Sony EX-70/71 earbuds.
It doesn't look quite as clean and neat as the provided caps, but the fit is so much better and allows these buds to really shine. In my opinion, they sound so much better than the Sony's.
If only there was a convenient place to obtain the Sony caps without having to purchase the entire package. Sony's parts store online has them for $6 or $8 a pair, plus shipping, but unless you already have tried the Sony buds and know what size you need, it could be costly to figure out this way.
If you own the Apple in-ear buds, and know someone with the Sony EX-70/71s, you owe it to yourself to try this. I was amazed at how much the sound and fit improved with the new caps installed.
