mp3 vbr questions

Hi, I'm an Ipod newbie, so much that I won't own one till next month. Anyway, I have been encoding my CD's in preperation using EAC and LAME, following the guide on http://cd-rw.org/articles/archive/mydeneaclame.cfm

The mp3s have been encoded into vbr files, with an average bitrate of 210kbps.

However, I have since read on several sites that the Ipod has trouble handling VBR mp3s, and sometimes cuts off roughly 20 seconds near the end of a song. Is this true? I have read many posts on this site by people all saying they use VBR, and none have ever mentioned any problems. Please say I won't have to re-encode all my cd's to be able to listen to them properly?!

It shouldn't have problems. With iTunes it added an extra 30 secs or so onto a song, but that was quickly resoloved with using EphPod.

Its not a hardware issue.

Don't even think that is a prolbem anymore. iTunes grabbed the correct length for all my APS songs...

Well, i've been using APS for awhile. Only until recently i've switched to 192CBR with -m (stereo).

but my iPod worked perfect with the VBR files.

You should stick with APS. 192 full stereo rips give just 96kbps per audio channel, which is not enough for a lot music.

used 192 mainly for compatibility issues.

My band ripped in CBR, so all fans could hear it properly. VBR caused problems on some linux machines, dunno why, but oh well.

VBR shouldn't cause problems on any properly configured linux box. Many bands, when offering songs to a group of fans, encode in 256kbps CBR.

192 for quality + space.

well configured, but who knows about some users.
