ripping/converting to mp3?

how do i get my cd's that i've bought onto my iTunes library. A couple of my cd's imported fine into my library. But the rest just won't import and when i try to play them back they just don't make any noise. i haven't actually got my iPod yet but am hopefully getting one at the end of the week. but if i can't put my cd's onto it then what's the benefits? i've heard people say that you have to copy to blank cd-r or rw and then rip it back onto iTunes in mp3. how do you do this and what does it mean? i don't really know that much about computer jargon so i don't know what ripping means. I've tried copying the cd to a blank cd-rw and then importing it to iTunes but nothing happens.
Please can someone help?

Read this tutorial on how to do it http://www.ipodlounge.com/articles_more.php?id=2354_0_8_0_M, if you can use AAC, which is another format like mp3. But if you simply must use mp3 over aac then you will need to get another program like cdex, since Apple doesn't have a good mp3 encoder.

Another MP3 encoder for iTunes on the Mac is available from Blacktree. Its a LAME encoder, one of the best.
