I just took my iPod apart and....
I could not believe how much GUNK had built up inside the case. I've had it for about 2 years now and never bothered to open it up. There was all kinds of goop and even some rotten banana (long story) up inside there. I managed to get it all cleaned up and then polished the front with some "Mothers California Gold Plastic Polish" and the back with "Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish" Almost looks like new. Not bad for 2 years worth of use...:)

Ok, here's the banana story:
I was in HAwaii (Kauai to be specific) in early December of last year. I ordered breakfast room service a couple of times while there. Enter the banana, it was on the breakfast tray. On the way out the door one morning I stuck the banana in the inside breast pocket of my jacket. I soon took the jacket off and when I packed a day or 2 later, the jacket went into my luggage. When I got home the jacket wound up in the back of my car.
Fast Foreword to March of 04.
I'm on a bus trip for part of a business trip. It's 4AM and the bus drive decides he has to take a leak. In the middle of downtown L.A. At 4 in the morning. We find an open 7-11 and everyone tramps off the bus. Now when I got on the bus, someone near me mentioned it smelled like banana bread in the back of the bus, but as lots of folks had brought breakfast stuff with them, I didn't think much of it.
When the bus trip started I had put my iPod in my jacket pocket while listening to it. When we got off the bus, I realized that my shirt and inside of my jacket were wet. I pulled out my iPod and discovered it was all slimey. It had been sitting in the pocket with the banana from December for about 2 hours. It was nice and warm and gooey and smelled like...well, banana bread.
I managed to get the iPod wiped down and the jacket cleaned off, but for the next several weeks the buttons on my iPod were sticky. I eventually had to take the scroll wheel off and clean that whole portion to get them to function again. I never would have thought about it getting INSIDE the iPod.
I just randomly decided to open the unit up the other day and was shocked to find some STILL MOIST banana residue on the inside. The rest of the gunk was just general dirt from 2 years of use. Still, just the fact that the banana residue was still moist kind of scares me....
Oddly enough, the banana didn't smell until I squished while putting the jacket on. The skin was apparently still intact until then and the rotting smell never go out. Mashing it with the iPod into it only made it worse.

Ha ha ha! Thats a pretty funny story. Too bad you mashed em together.
I still dont see how you could forget about a banana for 3 months. And i would think that the banana wouldn't get inside either.
After 3 months was the banana almost luqidy mush. Because incidently i found a rotten banana in my room today. Probably not that old, but it was almost a liquidy mush.

I guess I should have added that I didn't wear the jacket from the time I took it off in Hawaii until the morning of the bust trip. It just sat in the car. I guess since I never even picked it up, I just plain forgot the banana was inside.:(
