my new iPod has made me an apple believer!
less than 24 hours after my iPod arrived in my hands and I'm already *totally* won over by apple. Everything from the truly artistic box it came in to iTunes to the iPod interface itself (both physical and firmware!!) have shown me that there is a better way, and that way is apple.
To my Dell I say -- your days are numbered.
To all of you I say -- hello, and I'm so glad I'm here!:D
>>edit -- oops, wrong forum :o ..mods, can someone move this to the iPod General forum please?
# 1 Re: my new iPod has made me an apple believer!
Just because your iPod kicks ### doesn't mean the rest of their products do. I don't blame you for getting rid of a Dell though, why don't you get a custom built PC, unless you want to deal with not being able to get programs for your oh so 'glorious' apple computer

I'm sorry, but after my last XP laptop crashed I switched to an iBook, and I never looked back. I can deal with the absence of software if in exchange I get a WORKING computer that doesn't crash EVER!.
I'm a believer!

My XP machine has been running over 3 weeks with no crashes.

My iMac ran over a year without a system crash or freeze. I had one application crash though. It was MS Internet Explorer.
# 5 Re: my new iPod has made me an apple believer!
i can never remeber the apple equivalent of ctrl-alt-del, because in the two years i have my iMac it has proabably only ever crashed 3 or 4 times.
seafoam, most useful apps are either ported onto mac or have a mac equivalent - definitely more games on pc though. and i smile when the news comes up with yet another worldwide virus alert...!
# 6 Re: my new iPod has made me an apple believer!
I also switched to an ibook 3 years ago and currently have 2. I would NEVER switch back to PC's. I use a PC at work and the darned thing screws up all the time. Just not user friendly, at least to me! I am a true believer in Apple and sing their praises whenever possible!!

Breathe, you fell into the "trap". Buy an iPod (or an iTune) and then start coveting other Apple hardware. Not that there's anything wrong with it. Maybe it works because everything works so well together. I will be getting a Powerbook this summer, and hopefully I find a good way to transfer all my music files from my currently Windows iPod to a Mac.
# 8 Re: my new iPod has made me an apple believer!
I guess it's all in what you want to do with your machines, i'd rather game and have a linux server - pc is much more flexable and customizable.

Not true. :) I honestly respect and welcome differing opinions, but let me better clarify my statement -- I'm *not* going to blindly dump my PC for a MAC because of my impression of my new iPod. And believe me, I'm not saying that I hate my Dell and refuse to use PC's ever again because of an iPod. I am saying that after seeing and testing out the thoughtful design and architecture of apple's products and their UNIX based software, I have concluded that it simply makes more sense for my needs than what I'm currently using.
FWIW, I also choose my vehicles the same way -- based on their thoughtful design, attention to detail and overall 'feel'...not their 0-60 times and skidpad numbers. The current debate over German vs. Japanese that rages on other discussion boards could certainly be compared to the Mac vs. PC debate, so I really do not want to go there. :) I think PC's are great...for what they do. I'm part of the IT group at a major corporation that's in the process of setting up a global ERP system; my team and I would never in a million years dream of running it on anything but Win2KPro.
...but when I get home at night, and want to edit digital video from my nephew's birthday party, burn it to DVD, store & make music, etc. etc, I believe I would prefer to use an apple. I'm not a gamer, and the most robust app I use at home would be Excel (obviously available for the apple). My wife's contact with the computer is almost exclusively with the internet. So, why not? I can think of only reasons to switch, not reasons to stay put.
Anyway, just wanted to clear the air and avoid a big messy pc vs. mac debate. :) :) PC's are great! My XP machine has never crashed in 2.5 years, and I have loved it dearly. I just want a change of scenery is all.

You can but its not necessarily going to have great performance. It certainly won't run as well as on an actual PC. But depending on what your requirements are, it could work for you.

I've used PCs my whole life. I had a gateway laptop in college. It took forever to power up, the USB ports never worked, it took FOREVER to get it to recognize any new hardware I got for it (if it would recognize it at all). Toward the end the battery only lasted 10 minutes (and to those who say macs are more expensive, a replacement battery for the gateway was almost $300). Running photoshop on that thing was a nightmare.
I got my first mac, a 12" powerbook, about 7 months ago. You can count how many times I've had to restart it on one hand with a few fingers to spare. I had to restart my PCs once or twice a day. I got an iPod in December, and it has only reinforced how great I think the mac platform is. God, I hope I never have to deal with a PC again.
Granted, I haven't used a PC since Windows 98 (I don't know if they've changed much since then), and I'm not a gamer.

I think it would blatently (definition: intuitively obvious to even the most casual student and obervers of these affairs) obvious to users of the iPod what Apple's marketing scheme is. I shouldn't have to explain it to you, but I will. Apple wants people to try products such as iTunes (a free application). After using iTunes, if you enjoy it (especially the iTunes music store with sells cheap music) you buy a $400 music player because it's the only one which integrates with iTunes. After a positive experience with the iPod, you may think/explore/consider (delete as necessary) one of Apple's $999-$3000 computers.
If you think the idea is for people to buy an iPod and instantly become brand loyal to anything and everything Apple. Think about that for a second. "Let's have people buy one of our products, and they will dump everything they own in a different category and buy our products just because it's associated with us" is not what any sane person would call a sound strategy. The idea is for people to "Think Different" about their next hardware purchase, not "Follow Blindly."
I am offended by your attempt to twist my words into an insult against you.

Okay, people like you are what is giving the rest of us mac heads a bad name.
I am also considering switching back. For what I do, I dont really need a certain OS. (Basic computer use, graphic design)
I know my computer stuff too.. please dont try to conivince me otherwise.
# 16 Re: my new iPod has made me an apple believer!
I build my own computers. This computer runs on WIN2k SP4 and I havn't had a SINGLE problem with it (thus far). I'd have to venture to say that Win2k SP4 has to be the most stable and well rounded OS MS produced. I rarely have to restart this box either. It stays on weeks upon end (sometimes a full month) and I do all sorts of rendering, designing, gaming, etc. :D
Sorry, but the only thing I'll ever use Apple for is iPod, and when I _have_ to use a mac like for school in the texture labs. (Next year)

For people that only do basic computing, a Mac is an awesome machine. Stability up the wazoo. Plus its a #### good machine.
But again, There is no specifics in either, that would make either basic windows users or mac users switch.
Well possibly stability issues.

I absolutely did not think you insulted me, for the record. :) Sorry you got that impression. Just having a discussion is all. My point was to clarify that I wasn't 'trap'ped. Like you, I'm considering alternatives (i.e. apple), and am seriously considering switching.
I am well aware of the marketing effors of apple, and every other company I'm exposed to every minute of the day for that matter. As an educated man, I choose to weigh products costs against their benefits, not be wooed by their high priced marketing.
Just wanted to set the record straight.
:) :)

TacoJohn,
I fell too! I got an iPod about a month ago and just last weekend went back for an iMac! I love it - whole new world!
I got some advice from the folks at Apple for moving my iTunes songs onto the new machine. It worked great.
Before you do anything, make sure you've got the autosync function disabled and are on manual. You can change it back to auto on the new machine later if you want.
You'll need to enable your iPod as a data storage device. I think I right clicked on the iPod icon in iTunes to do this. After you do that, the PC will recognize the iPod as another hard drive. You can simply copy the iTunes data files from your old computer, then, link the iPod to your Powerbook and it will again be recognized as an external hard drive. iTunes will already be loaded on your Powerbook, so you can just drag your files from the iPod into the new empty library. You won't have your old playlists, so you'll have to recreate those, but you'll have all your tunes!
I've had to move all of my tunes twice in the past month! First, because my work Dell PC was infected by a virus, and then to get them onto my iMac! So, it can be done, and it's not terribly difficult -- I'm no tech-head, that's for sure!

# 20 Re: my new iPod has made me an apple believer!
has anybody here used the remote desktop connection to run a pc from a mac? I am interested in an apple laptop as my next laptop, but as a .net developer I still need windows running someplace. Sop I can leave a desktop running somewhere and connect to it from the laptop and work away.
Has anybody done something like this?

I don't know anything about it, but here's the link to what microsoft has to say.
