Talk about a conversation piece
I have the Altec Lansing inMotion iPod speakers. I work for a major airline here in S.D. and when I have to coordinate (talk to the aircraft on approach, in the gate and upon departure) I set it up in the office to enjoy good music. Well, last night was a night from hell. The weather here in S.D. hasn't been the best. We've had about three or four days straight of rain and it plays havoc with the ATC (air traffic control) in our and other cities. Sometimes we have to hold a flight into and out of another city (case in point, Las Vegas had such bad weather that we could not send a plane there and they couldn't send one to us. so the aircraft just sat in the gate area until clearance. then, we have to use the other gates for other flights not on holds. which, makes for a very long night. we have to move flights and passengers).
Well, the point to all this is that the flight crews whose flights were delayed come down to our operations center to store their gear, eat, and socialize until their flights are released. They like to come into the coordinators office to hang out so they can get firsthand information about their flights. Well, a whole mess of them came in to chat and ended up talking about my setup....jeez, these guys fly 50 million dollar aircraft and they kept marveling how cool the setup was. One pilot swore that as soon as he got home he was getting an iPod, an iTrip, and the inMotion speakers. Another one was going to check out this forum before he bought one, and another had one in his brain bag, and he started to talk to me about how much he loved his iPod. Now, that's all fine and dandy but when all these pilots were in my office I still had to talk to aircraft, customer service agents, ramp agents, fuelers, other fellow ops agents, the ATC tower and answer the phone!!! The guys were in the office for about 2 hours or so. The noise level was pretty high (iPod playing and pilots yapping).
I just wish all this happened on a night where there was a full moon and not a cloud in sight.
All in all I think the iPod made an impression.

It is really hard to concentrate with all the background noise but we keep the volume low enough to hear the music but it's not loud to where we can't hear the radio traffic. What was loud though were the pilots yapping on and on about the iPod. They did have smarts enough not to ask questions while we were preforming our duties. Believe me, the safety of my aircrews and passengers is way more important that the iPod stuff. I just thought it was interesting enough to post how facinated these guys were with it. Sorry, if I led y'all to believe that the iPod is more important than safety.....BUT like I said....Safety comes first.
