New User w/audio book question
I am a new user who loves to read. I get the latest books on CD from my local library (free) and listen to them in my car (it really helps with road rage sometimes). I would also like to be able to listen to them on my iPod while sitting on the beach watching the sun set on vacation. I have successfuly downloaded books (to iTunes) and placed each cd in its on playlist to keep them organized so they play in order but I have a problem with the next track starting before the first one is finished. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
I have purchased books from audible.com and have not had this issue however I listen to so many books I can never support my habit which is why my local library knows me well. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's a link to a thread that describes how to convert audio books from a CD or tape to a format that works well on an iPod. I'm not sure that this will solve your problem, but it could help. The link: http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25502

This looks like great information I'll give it a try, thanks for the help!

Sweetpea, one word of caution. Be sure to read the last post in that thread. After a whole lot of work converting files according to that thread, you will find that with files created using this method, bookmarks get erased every time you plug in your iPod.
I thought it was pretty cool until I found that out, since I tend to plug in my iPod every day to either charge it or load something new. Very seldom do I listen to a complete book before pluggin in again.

Let's clarify: I believe the bookmarks get erased when you *dock* your ipod, i.e. sync it with your computer. If you're just charging it, that's not a problem. And if you take a moment to note where you were in the book before syncing, then you have no worries.

right. I understand that, but thanks for the clarification in case others don't. I sync/dock pretty often because I have a lot of music and also subscription content.
Sure, I can write down where I was, but that really that kinda defeats the purpose, since thats what we were trying to avoid in the first place. With Audible type files, the bookmarks are maintained even when you snyc the iPod.
I'm sure some people will still find this to be a useful tool/tip. But its worth knowing up front what it will do and what it won't do.

Good points. I'm sure most people dock a lot more than I do, which is every few days.

I usually charge my iPod directly from ac power--only docking to my computer every two or three weeks, so I find the bookmarking of "mb4" files very useful...it's usefulness definitely depends on your "docking/syncing style". It sure would be nice if there was a way to retain mb4 bookmarks through a syncing session!

Thanks everyone, its always good to know what your getting into.

Do I understand your original question/problem - your tracks start to blend into each other? If that's the case, then it is in your playback preferences. You can choose to have a pause, or blend songs together as a "nice" transition - decent for music, but awful for spoken word. Change your settings and this should take care of it.
I've been reading a lot of thread to see how people handle importing audio books. This is my method (I like it... so I'll preach its virtues!!):
1. Join tracks
a. Select all tracks
b. Click above the track numbers (so the arrow points up)
c. Click on the Advanced menu, and select "Join Tracks" (which is enabled once you click above the track number and have multiple tracks selected)
2. Import
3. Select the new imported track to edit it's information (I usually rename the track to "book name, part (1 for the first disk.....)"
4. Repeat for each disk
5. Select all and use the script "Make Bookmarkable" - available from Doug's AppleScripts http://www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/index.php
So far, I have not had too many problems with dropped bookmarks, but they have occurred with files downloaded from Audible, not with these - as of yet.

EDIT:
Grayed out can be solved by either
1. Making certain you have tracks highlighted
2. Clicking on left most and blank column heading until files/songs are in sequence -- do this even if song appear to be in sequence.
Someone reported that clicking on track number col also worked.
See Complete Beginner?s Guide for Copying Audio CD?s into a Bookmarking iTunes/iPod file (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=201254#post201254)
I was not able to get join tracks to work on a pc (stays greyed-out under all circumstances). You must be Apple. So, the somewhat cumbersome, but workable solution at Audio CD'sto bookmarkable Files on iPod (click here) (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25502) go to page 2, Mar 24 Post for details for CD rip to iPod bookmarkable. Seems to be necessary for pc users. Anyone with a better solution for pc's, please post it in that and this thread.

Bill,
Your suggestion of changing my playback settings worked on my immediate issue, thanks.
I also followed your instructions on merging tracks and it worked perfectly for me. When I got to the point where I wanted to make a bookmarkable file I just went to the previous thread and turned the files into an AAC file and changed the ending as suggested (thanks for the step by step instructions Robert). It is working perfectly on both my iPod and iTunes.
I am on a pc running Win XP with iTunes.
