20gb 4th gen Ipod problem

A few days ago, I received a 20gb 4th gen Ipod that I bought on Ebay. I installed the included cd and hooked up the Ipod to my PC. It worked fine and the songs started transferring, but when it got about 1/10th of the way through it just plain stopped. After browsing a lot of sites I realized I must need the new version of iTunes, so I downloaded that. Only problem is, my Ipod doesnt mount on Itunes anymore or in My Computer. When I plug the Ipod into the USB, it takes about an hour for iTunes to load up, with no signs of the Ipod in available devices. Once I can finally unplug it from my PC and try to turn it on, either the sad face or the exclamation mark shows up. If I let it sit for about 30 mins and try again, it turns on normally and the songs that I had uploaded earlier are on it and work. I tried restoring it, but it seems impossible. Other than that Ive done the R techniques suggested by Apple, but they dont seem to be helping. Ive been all over google trying to fix this; Ive always been good with technology and computers, and not being able to make this work is driving me insane. Did I get ripped off on Ebay? Someone please help me fix my Ipod. Will paypal a bit of cash.
