Windows Reinstall Question

Firstly, this probably isn't the greatest of places to ask this, but here goes:

My best friend's computer died a terrible death. Either a crappy virus, or a dead harddrive. Either way, we decided that the best option (after trying tons of other things, like Live CDs and things like that) was to reinstall Windows XP Home. He had just moved and didn't have/know the whereabouts of the disks, so we called up Dell, and despite not having a warranty, they sent them to us because "the computer had been good with Dell."

We installed it, and it worked fine. Booted up, wireless mouse worked fine right off the bat, and all was good. We installed Norton and tried to connect to the internet. He has Comcast internet, and a wireless router. We ran the software that came from Comcast. It said he didn't have a NIC. He does, and it's built in to the computer, a Dell Dimension. We put in the Dell Drivers Disk which said the driver for the card was installed. We rebooted and repeated the steps. For the record, the Comcast instructions were followed exactly, and everything was plugged in right. We were not using the router, we will do that after.

Thoughts? What's wrong with it?

If any other info is needed, just ask.

# 1 Re: Windows Reinstall Question
I recently had to do this with my lappy after receiving it back from being repaired. My wireless would not work, and neither would the NIC. I found that one driver was not updated, and another was missing completely. I went to HP's website and downloaded the latest drivers from there on my fiancee's computer, then transferred to mine. You might try that, as the disc could be outdated, or missing a required driver.

Are you sure the wireless stuff is working OK? There should be a utility for the wireless NIC that came with the Dell drivers (just look through your programs). If its OK, open up a command prompt (Start->Run, enter "cmd") and enter "ipconfig /all". What does it say?

(of course all of the above is entered without quote signs)

It's wired. The router is for later and is for the Wii and that kind of stuff. For now though, the PC goes straight to the modem.

edit: Until we unplugged everything, the Wii still connected fine.
