A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
i have written a little application to copy music from your computer to the iPod, from the iPod back to your computer and (maybe the best thing) from one iPod to another iPod.
Because of this application is written in java you can use it on Linux or Windows or even on a Mac. Here (http://www.jakpod.de/content/view/16/34/) you can find some screenshots.
The Homepage is only in german (until now) but if you start the application (called "JakPod") on a system with an default locale that is not german you will see an english version of JakPod. I hope JakPod is self-explanatory. If not - don't hesitate to ask (here or in the JakPod Forum (http://www.jakpod.de/component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,8/)).
Maybe one important thing to know: you need a Java 6 JRE to run JakPod. You can download it here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) (the 4th download from the top).
A short "installation" instruction:
- download JakPod (from here (http://www.jakpod.de/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,27/))
- extract the downloaded "zip" package to a place you want (e.g. "D:\JakPod" or even on the iPod itself)
- navigate to the installation folder ond start JakPod by using the "jakpod.bat" (on Windows) or "jakpod.sh" (on Linux - remember to make it executeable).
Thats all.
Give it a try - it's freeware.
FFNB.

Hmm, I'll give it a try sometime. I have a new computer, so it might be useful. If it works as it should, good post mate.
# 6 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
now JakPod (version 0.8(Beta 4) and above ( http://www.jakpod.de/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,27/func,select/id,1/)) supports the new iTunesDB (iTunes 7.1) Format. Give it a try - its freeware.

# 9 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
there is a new JakPod release (0.8). It can be downloaded here (http://www.jakpod.de/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,27/func,select/id,2/).
This is primary a bugfix-release that fixes some minor issues with the new database format generated from iTunes 7.1.
If you have no problems with an older Version there is no need to update!
changelog abstract:
- BugFix: Error with empty iTunes 7.1 databases fixed
- Feature: Repair actions now also can handle "mp3", "wav", "m4a", "m4b", "mp4" and "m4v" files
- Knwon issue: If the "sorting tag" is used (in iTunes) - Artists may appear twice on the iPod
Further information you can find in the changelog.txt delivered with JakPod.
Kind regards, FFNB.
PS: I am searching for someone that understands a little german (not essential because of i speak a little english) and speaks nativ english to help me translating the JakPod homepage. If one feels like doing that please send a mail to: JKubitschek@JakPod.de
# 10 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Just wondering how this deals with TV episodes? and can it repair Album Art not showing? downloading it now (incl. the 7.1 iTunes which I hadn't noticed was out) :)
MadBob at 2007-11-15 17:22:52 >

# 11 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
no, Album Art is not supported and can't be repaired (at the moment).
Only transferring Music and Videos from PC to iPod, from iPod to PC and from iPod to another iPod is supported.
This programm is more a "nice copy tool" than an alternative to iTunes.
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 12 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
You didn't specify or maybe I missed it. But the ipod to another ipod copy is supported by connecting the two ipod to a computer, correct?
# 13 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
You didn't specify or maybe I missed it. But the ipod to another ipod copy is supported by connecting the two ipod to a computer, correct?
You are absolute correct!
I specified this only imlicit: to copy from one iPod to another you need the JakPod application, to run this application you need a computer - so you need a computer to copy from one iPod to another.
It was not my intention to cause confusion - so i am sorry if i did!
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 14 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
I noticed that the program is in another language, however I'm trying it out and downloading it now. Thanks!
EDIT: I don't get how I install this thing, can someone help?
# 15 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
please read my first post in this thread.
If you have furter questions about language/installation - dont hesitate to ask.
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 16 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
The app will not work under Mac OS X because Java 6 isn't avaliable for OS X yet (there is however a developer preview build of Java 6 on ADC); the latest is JRE 1.5.0_07. I just tried and the app errors out stating it requires Java 6.
Just thought the author and other mac users might want to know.
# 17 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Can you load the program to any other device (PDA)?
I have a "Hitch" by Sima...and it works really well for iPod to iPod transfers or even to camera/camcorder...but I'm always looking for ways to cut down on the # of devices I carry around.....
# 18 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
JakPod is running on all devices wehre an JRE6 ( http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) exists for.
As far as i know there is no such JDK for handhelds.
Sorry.

Hi,
When you figure out how to connect ipod to ipod without a computer then I will purchase your application.
There is nothing to purchase. JakPod is freeware. One can use it or not.
I have a g4 Imac with os 10x.
Did you have installed the Java 6 JRE from here (http://developer.apple.com/java/) (at the moment there is only a developer prerelease for Mac available and i have no idea when Apple will release a final version). If yes you have only to open the jakpod.jar file.
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 22 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
first of all you have to first install Java 6 Runtime Enviernment in order to use jakPod and just double click jakpod.bat nd there you have it
P.S. I have a problem one of the genres' come up twice on the iPod but it was only once copied to the iPod,
Thanx.

Try this link ( http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jakpod.de%2F&langpair=de%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools)

Hi,
Try this link (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jakpod.de%2F&langpair=de%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools)
the google translation is a little "dangerous". ;)
An Example (the first sentence translated with google):
"No, here there is not to win nothing and also Poker play can one here."
If one translate it correct it should sounds more like:
"No, there is nothing to win, and you also can't play poker here."
I wrote this sentence at the beginning of the homepage to avoid confusion between the words "JakPod" (this is from my name Jan Kubitschek and iPod) and "Jackpot".
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 28 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Ahh but if you read the Google translated sentence in Yoda's voice it makes perfect sense :)

because of JakPod selects recursive (inside the tree view) you must only click inside the little square at the verry top of the tree (right beside the iPod name). Now you can see that JakPod checks all artists/albums/tracks. After that press "F2" to copy all the tracks to your harddisk.
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 31 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
If I install this program directly to my 80G Video ipod...
Will there be any issues with Uninstallation??
And for some reason, when i try to install, I have no idea how to get to the "jakpod.bat" installation file is... Please help!
# 32 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
the "installation" of JakPod is verry simple. Just unpack (extrackt) the zip file you have downloaded to a lokation you like. For instance: if your iPod is mounted as drive "E:" create a folder "JakPod" and extract the downloaded archive to "E:\JakPod". In this folder you will find the file "jakpod.bat" (that is used to start the application JakPod). To uninstall you have only to delete the "E:\JakPod" folder.
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 33 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
OK... so that means that jakpod.bat must be included in the inital unzipped file... For some reason i was only seeing the jakpod.sh... I'll try it again...
thanks =)
# 34 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
if you extract the archive (i would recommend to use the latest beta because of it seems to be verry stable) you should see the following files:
changelog.txt
iPod.properties
jakpod.bat
jakpod.ico
jakpod.jar
jakpod.properties
jakpod.sh
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 35 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
I click on thr bat file and the splash screen pops up for second then disapears.
*edit* the beta just sits at the splash screen

# 36 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
does JakPod start correctly if your iPod is not connected? If yes, something seems to be wrong with the Database on the iPod. A quick workaround (that worked for the most people with a similar problem) is to start iTunes, wait until the iPod was found from iTunes and then close iTunes. Wait for about half a minute and then start JakPod again. iTunes should have written the iTunesDB in the correct format back to the iPod and JakPod will work...
To analyze your problem deeper it would be helpful if you send the error.log (located in the JakPod folder) at JKubitschek@JakPod.de
Some further questions:
- which operating system do you use
- what kind of iPod you had connected during the startup of JakPod
- do you use any other tool with your iPod (e.g. WinAmp, Yamipod ...)
Kind regards, FFNB.

May I say what a great utility.
Installed, told me I needed JRE6. Went over to RyanVM's MFSN Files for his switchless installer of JRE6.0.1 (11mb download), installed that and ran the your .bat file and worked a treat. Excellent
Would be great if there was a way to customise the Copy to Hard Disk filename structure.
ie use basic fields to describe folder structure and filename.
(Running Windows XP SP2 latest updates, iTunes 7.10)
Good job.

Hi,
thank you for the flowers!
At the moment i am working on the issue magyar (and some others) described in the posting above run into. After that a fileexplorer will be implemented (at the moment the beta version of JakPod supports drag and drop from the windows fileexplorer to the iPod but i like to have an fileexplorer inside the JakPod application to copy mediatracks)
Because of you are not the only asking for the feature to make the copy to Harddisk action customizeable i will see what i can do at this point.
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 40 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
there is a new beta version of JakPod available!
The most important thing in this beta is, that the bug magyar has reported here (http://forums.ilounge.com/showpost.php?p=1101429&postcount=38) is fixed.
There are some other small enhancements but nothing that is worth to be named here. If one is interested - an changelog is part of the download package.
You can download JakPod v0.81 (Beta4) from here (http://www.jakpod.de/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,27/func,select/id,1/).

# 41 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
I am trying to plug my ipod into my job computer, when i plug it in i see the song pop up in Jakpod but then it disconnects, this is the first time this ipod is connected to the computer, what should I do?
# 42 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
there are a lot of possible reasons for this.
Please try the following steps:
- connect your iPod to the computer
- open the windows file explorer
=> can you see that the iPod is mounted and has an driveletter assigned?
- if yes, browse with the windows file explorer inside the iPod assigned drive
If the iPod drive dissapears after some seconds frome the explorer - try another USB-Port. The best ones are at the back of your computer under the PS2-connectors for mouse and keyboard. This is what has helped the most people running in the "disconnect problem".
If the iPod don't get a driveletter from windows you must switch the option "use as harddrive" (maybe it sounds a little different but i have no english iTunes here) on with iTunes or you must start the iPod in "disk mode". Here (http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/diskmode/index.shtml) you will find a little description how the iPod can started in "disk mode".
If this doesn't help please provide me some further information like:
- the operation system you use
- are you logged in as administrator or a user in the administrator group (maybe yout IT department has disabled the usage of USB devices and/or iPods on your workstation)
- what kind of iPod do you use
Hope this helps a little... - have fun with JakPod.
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 43 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
I think the problem is that this ipod is from my other computer and on the computer I want to hook it up to, there is my second ipod already set on this computer. I rprobably need a way to have multiple ipods on one computer. How can i do this?
# 44 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
you can connec t as much iPods to your computer as you have. Maybe on some operating systems there are limitations regarding to the available driveletters but basically there is absolutely no limitation.
The point is, that it is essentially for third party tools to work correctly, that the iPod is mounted as a "removeable disk drive". The computer itself makes no difference if this is an iPod or an harddisk or any other removeable drive or if this device was mounted before on any other computer.
JakPod for instance supports explicitly 2 or more connected iPods on one computer at the same time. So you can copy music or videos from one iPod to another iPod on the fly (if they are not DRM-protected)!
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 45 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
I feel stupid asking this, but how do I copy songs from iPod to local iTunes library (and keep the playcounts)? I have no problem copying albums to hard drive (with "F2 Copy to hard disk"), but what does "F3 Add to library do"? If I select "File | Add files to local library...", I get a file open dialog - what am I supposed to browse there?
# 46 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
JakPod was made to give people a(nother) chance to copy tracks from/to their iPod without using iTunes (for instance people using a UNIX machine) and so JakPod doesn't support the iTunes local library.
JakPod itself works (in a similar way than iTunes does) with a local library. With "F3" you can copy tracks to the JakPod local library.
I am sorry to say that but with JakPod you can't copy anything to the iTunes library.
Kind regards, FFNB.

# 55 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
Are we supposed to load the application on the ipod itself, or on the computer. I am new to this, and assumed the batch file should be run on the computer and not the ipod.
A short "installation" instruction:
- download JakPod (from here (http://www.jakpod.de/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,27/))
- extract the downloaded "zip" package to a place you want (e.g. "D:\JakPod" or even on the iPod itself)

I am not exactly sure how you copy non-music files to the ipod yet. Please advise.
Your iPod should be shown as removeable harddsik and so you can copy files to the iPod as to any other harddisk.
I have no idea about the type designation "ML450" but if yout iPod is not a verry new one named "classic" JakPod should work.
Kind regards, FFNB.
# 56 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
any ideas how long before jakpod will be compatible with classic ipods?
# 57 Re: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod)
Hi,
JakPod (0.84 (Beta1)) can handle the new iPods only if there is an SysInfo (or SysInfoExtended) file on the iPod (at "iPod_Control/Device/") that contains the "FirewireGuid" of this iPod.
If there is no such file on the iPod or if the file does not contain the "FirewireGuid" of this iPod the music will not be shown on it...
Kind regards, FFNB.
